View Full Version : 1970-08-01 Honolulu

This show was partially recorded and surfaced in WMA format in early 2006.

It turned up on the EH site in Real Audio format, another lossy conversion....

This torrent is for the 'original' WMA files, and a FLAC version of a edit i did, some EQ etc.

The original recording had a 'echo from the future' in the left channel, since the recording itself appears to be mono this channel was dropped in the edit version.

1 Straight Ahead
2 Ezy Ryder
3 Hey Baby
4 Spanish Castle Magic
5 Red House

The partially synched 8mm that came with it is also included.

Those are the facts, now the opinions:

I think this was one of the best concerts of 1970.
Jimi appears to be in a very good mood which is reflected in his playing. Finally, an audience that doesnt scream for 'Wild Thing/Foxy Lady/Purple Haze/burn that guitar Jimi!'
inbetween all songs. This version of Hey Baby is -afaik- the only live version that has a intro and an ending, its not the usual ending where it would be a medley with the next song - or drum solo.

So, the show is really good, the audio really isnt.
Still hope it will be enjoyed!

Thanks so much! This show has been elusive for me...I guess there is that old rumor that someone recorded the whole thing on a c-120 tape and that was not enough for the whole show...kinda hard to believe. Maybe one day that tape will show up, in the meantime thx for this!!!!

Honolulu International CenterNowadays it's called the Neil S. Blaisdell Center.Well according to that wikipedia link, it used to be called the Hawaii International Center. However, wikipedia is a user-generated database. I don't count on wiki as gospel-truth.

Now, about some artwork for this. Isn't firstrays the un-official CCT artwork designer? (hint-hint ... ;) )

:)i dont know if anybody noticed, but on this Hey Baby Jimi actually sings 'Hey Gypsy Baby, where do you come in from' - just like on the Rainbow Bridge album, not the often (mis-)interpreted 'Hey Baby, where do you coming from' - which would just be wrong:)

it also seems that this is the beginning of the concert, they start with 3 new songs in a row and nobody complains! jimi's playing on those reminds me closely of the 'finished' studio tracks of those songs, moreso than other live shows of that period.

here's a small torrent for the artwork that Pete H. made, sorry i didnt include it strate away.

Yes the arena was called the Honolulu International Center when this concert happened. I know because I was in the audience. Still stands out as one of the best concerts I ever saw, and there have been a couple of hundred since, at a guess. The only time I got to see Jimi live. That was a great summer. Jimi, Janis and Led Zeppelin all played HIC that summer and I managed to see them all. Too damn bad that we're not talking about the great things that Jimi's doing now and when his next show will be. Sigh.
I remember that Jimi, Mitch and Billy came on stage in the dark. Sounds of plugging in and tuning up. Then the promise that they were going to play loud, louder loudest and we were going to get high higher highest. Lights, volume Straight Ahead. Promise fulfilled. Sometime during the bluesy interlude in the middle of Hey Baby the empty seat next to me was taken by a guy going Damn how much have I missed? Looked at my watch. Only 10-15 minutes in and seemed like hours already. Magic.
For the encore Jimi comes out and thanks the crowd. voice breaking with what seemed like genuine emotion. He was enjoying it and so were we. Plays 3 more songs and he's gone. Now it doesn't seem like it lasted any where near long enough. A few short weeks later and he's really gone. Aloha, Jimi and Mahalo.

Awesome, thnx for sharing that Gearyr. If you care to elaborate more fully on this 'experience' please do so in The 'Official' "I saw Jimi Hendrix in concert" topic over in the 'Everything Else' forum. A 'living witness' is always a great addition to the community. Either way, thnx again.

On the Jimi Hendrix concert streaming website, it gives the names of the tapers:

"Although this recording is incomplete, tapers Jim and Bill Worthley managed to preserve "Straight Ahead," "Ezy Ryder," "Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)," "Spanish Castle Magic," and the majority of "Red House" before the tape runs out."

I was there too! We sat in the loges off to stage right so we were on Jimi's side. Do you remember when he broke a string(s) on his Strat and how pissed he was? We could see it in his face as he threw the guitar to the roadie. And I mean he LAUNCHED that thing!

I still have the handbill to that show. Pretty beat up but framed and one of my prized possessions from my youth.

Also saw Led Zep that year but not Janis (...hey, I was in high school, couldn't afford every concert). Man, Jimmy Page was so freakin' skinny I thought his Les Paul was gonna drag him down!! Gosh, those memory cells are still floating around after 39 years!!!

I remember someone posted this image here a few months ago. According to the covers it seems to contain the rest of this show. Suppose it could just be a hoax or a mislabeled show pretending to be another. AFAIK only one tape of this show has ever surfaced, and it's tragically incomplete.

Damn shame. Oh well, maybe someday it'll turn up elsewhere (or here). Hopefully for much less than $75 bucks though.

Just wanted to update on the CD reportedly of Honolulu -
http://www.ioffer.com/i/jimi-hendrix-live-oahu-hawaii-aug-1st-1970-cd-145192699

Selling it here...I have every reason to believe this is fake (based on our knowledge of circulating tape)
His other boots are very pricey - so I doubt I will try to buy...
Like Johan said above - unless I can get a sample, it is no go...
Anyone else have it?

The company Northern Songs Unlimited seems to have alot of Hendrix stuff, but I can tell you fairly easily that what that Honolulu CD says is a lie, considering they offer "Live At Sportpalast Berlin Germany January 23rd 1969 - Soundboard Recording".

They also seem to be selling Olve's Stuttgart recording for as much of a outrageous price as the rest of their crap.

Have a look anyone else who is interested in seeing the "cellophane"

http://northernsongsunlimited.com/browse_hendrix.

P (http://northernsongsunlimited.com/browse_hendrix.html)S - they also have Live in Vienna January 22nd as a "soundboard tape".

Over on the Honolulu "definitive cleanup" thread, Lostarchives, who was there, said:

"I'll never forget the encore, and rushing the stage. He played "All Along The Watchtower."

AATW is late in the set on this CD.

Personally, though,I doubt the CD is real.
