The currently accepted date for this is Summer 1969, but from Shokan rather than the Beverley Rodeo. Both McDermott and Gerry Guida (who taped this) confirm that.
"Back on the Desert" is also a Guida recording from the same location. These recordings appear on the Shokan ATM that was compiled a few years ago.

The "Shokan" location is a common misconception, so often repeated that it has become a factoid, it is actually 'Ashokan House', Traver Hollow Road, Boiceville [hamlet], Olive [town] Ulster Co. N.Y. (in the Catskills). Shokan is another nearby hamlet. The similar name of the house and nearby hamlet obviously caused the confusion

Ashokan? Could it have something to do with the famous hindu king Ashoka?

yes, there seems to have been a number of locations given over the years, and a lot of minor confusion in the process! including just listing the location as "Woodstock". Ashokan causes confusion too, since that's yet another distinct town in the area. i remember driving through this area a few years back, and there was a new little town every couple of miles!

the first mention of Boiceville i ever read was in David Henderson's book many years ago, although i think he spelled it Boiseville.

in the November '69 Rolling Stone article by Sheila Weller, she spoke of driving up to Jimi's house in "Liberty, NY" in September 1969. that's not even close, almost 30 miles away. people seemed to have difficulty with the location even from the beginning!

Maybe the "Liberty" address was deliberate to mislead unwanted visitors?
