Hi Folks
I have been wondering as to the whereabouts or the current owners of Jimi's guitars, specifically the black Strat and the left handed Flying V used at the Isle of Wight. I read somewhere that Monika Dannermann had the strat for years after Jimi's death. Anyone know anymore?

doesnt the uli roth the scorpians guitar player have the mythical black strat, aka the machine gun strat? someone should get on his case about displaying this guitar. its my favorite hendrix guitar. fender should make a tribute to it.

Uli Jon Roth is as big of a nut case as Monika Dannermann was.

The day that "Blacky" comes out of hiding will be the day that Uli drops dead. I bet he prays or masturbates to that Strat daily.:bartmoon:

As far as i know, it has never been confirmed that Uli Roth got the black strat after Monika's death. I believe their relationship was some years in the past by the time she died.

BTW, Uli Jon Roth is an incredible guitar player, IMHO.

AFAIK, the black Flying V is owned by the Hard Rock Café chain. I know they used to keep it at the London one.

Stuck on a wall, what a waste. I'd rather see some kid learning the "trade" with it that see it suffer this fate !

It'll be a shame if we end up finding more of Jimi's guitars have attained the status of artifacts.
Won't be surprised though.:(

All the more discomforting to know that the white Woodstock strat is in the hands of the Experience Music Project museum in Seattle...

I believe Hard Rock Café (in Dallas, maybe?) owns the white 3-pickup Gibson SG as well. At least they used to. There's an old Metallica documentary, where you see Kirk Hammett trying (unsuccessfully) to convince the waitress to let him play it later that night, at a Metallica-show.

You shouldn't bash people you can't understand (not to mention the language). Uli Jon Roth is a great artist (as was Monika) and if he has the Black strat, then it is in the right hands.

the black strat should be on display. i dont see anything wrong with famous guitars being displayed. one of the greatest moments of my life was seeing the woodstock strat. i just hope they find the black strat one day. that thing rocks!

what can you do? The owners of these guitars get to decide what will be done with them. Perhaps you can write them and try and pursuade them to display them.

I wish EH would release a bunch more music- but they are the gate keepers whereas I dont get a say in the matter.

Ownership is the name of the game- if you dont own it - you dont get to play

So, it's not unanimous that some snot-nosed guitar-wiz-to-be kids should be given all of the surviving Hendrix guitars????!!

The best thing that could be done with the black Strat is exume Jimi's coffin, open it and place it in there with him. Give it back to it's rightful owner.

As you well understand (or maybe not!) the point being made is that it would be better if the fancy planks got played as oppossed to displayed.
Be great to see EC, Satch or going back a few years SRV playing these instruments. Going to a concert and seeing and hearing the instrument would be a bigger buzz than catchin' fly's while looking at a cabinet.

As for the Hendrix/Zappa strat, all that is left from Jimi's original is the body. Everything else (electronics/hardware, neck) was broken or fried. A possible exception is the bridge, but Dweezil replaced it anyway.

For some reason, i've never been completely convinced that this strat ever had anything to do with Jimi... There's something about the "either burnt in Miami or burnt much earlier at the Astoria, and kept for months and then given to Zappa"-scenario that doesnt really add up for me.

BTW, just to avoid some 40+ page discussion thread, i have no opinion (nor forensic evidence) on where the error might lie, or where the misinformation might originate from, if it finally turned out that this particular strat was never Jimi's at all!!!!

It's just one of those nagging little personal suspicions...

Both FZ and DZ have talked about this guitar over the years. Just checked for some Zappa books but looks like they een sold, swapped or stored.

The interviews must have been posted on the net somewhere, anybody?

Okay, i wasnt aware of the Howard Parker angle. Could seem it's pretty authentic after all.
Just to be sure: Dweezil ended up keeping the guitar after all, didnt he? I seem to remember that the minimum bid wasnt met...

I'm thinking that Jimi owned more than this burned guitar in his lifetime. So who has the others?

DevilsAvocado
07-13-10, 04:29 PM
Al Kooper claims Jimi gave him one of his strats as a "thank you" for Al's participation on Electric Ladyland. He allegedly sold it years ago, as he was afraid of burglars.

According to Electric Gypsy (which needs an update), Brian Eno owns (or used to own) one as well.

I remember the Univibes site had a story on the whereabouts of the psychedelic painted Flying V (which no longer has the psychedelic paint job).

Jimis painted flying v they say it wasn't paint he used but nail polish has been stripped and redone I think before jimi died he gave it to someone from the group traffic but in my opinion they ruined the guitar when they stripped it

What kind of dumbass strips the paint away from it, it's like taking a wire brush to the Mona Lisa!

Might as well strip the paint off of the Saville strat while we're at it.

Ineed. Al Kooper has/had the black pepper strat. Used in a small part of 1967 including the Monterey Pop Festival.
