VH1 AND HISTORY™ UNITE TO CELEBRATE THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF WOODSTOCK WITH AN ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY EVENT “WOODSTOCK: NOW & THEN”
PREMIERING ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 14 AT 9PM ON VH1 AND VH1 CLASSIC AND MONDAY, AUGUST 17 AT 8PM ON HISTORY

Documentary Directed By Academy Award Winning Filmmaker Barbara Kopple and Executive Produced By Original Festival Organizer Michael Lang
NEW YORK, NY, JUNE 24, 2009 – In the summer of 1969, on a farm about 90 miles north of New York City, more than 500,000 people gathered for a three day music festival that in an instant, defined a generation and changed popular culture forever…Woodstock.

Now, 40 years after that historic moment, History™ and VH1 Rock Docs have joined forces for the first time, for a unique television collaboration, one that celebrates and explores the deep history and fascination of Woodstock, as well as the incredible music experience that defined a generation. The definitive two-hour documentary, “Woodstock: Now & Then”, will premiere on Friday, August 14 at 9pm on VH1 and VH1 Classic and on Monday, August 17 at 8pm on History.

Directed and Produced by two-time Academy Award winning filmmaker Barbara Kopple and Executive Produced by Michael Lang, the original festival organizer, the film examines Woodstock from the perspectives of not only the musicians who graced the stage, but the fans who gathered in mass, the concert promoters who risked everything and countless others whose unique experiences help paint a tapestry of Woodstock that hasn’t been seen in recent years.

“Woodstock: Now & Then” explores the frenzied days leading up to and throughout the festival, from how the planners scrambled to find a concert site and the traffic jams that shut down the New York State thruway to the infamously bad “brown acid,” the thunderous rain and mud and, of course, the music. Weaving together first-hand accounts with rare archival images and an iconic soundtrack, the documentary allows those who were there a chance to relive the experience and gives an entirely new generation an opportunity to feel the magic of that time.

The film will also take an important look at Woodstock’s legacy through the eyes of today’s musicians and activists examining why Woodstock and all it symbolizes is still relevant in today’s culture.

For more information please log onto www.history.com/woodstock and for more information on VH1 Rock Docs go to www.vh1.com.

“Woodstock: Now & Then” is part of History’s celebration of the historic events that took place during the summer of 1969. History will premiere new specials that also include “Moonshot” (premiering Monday, July 20, 8pm) and The “Sex in 69: The Sexual Revolution in America” (premiering Monday, August 3, 8pm).

“Woodstock: Now & Then” is the newest film in the Emmy Award-winning VH1 Rock Doc franchise. VH1 Rock Docs are feature-length documentaries that tell unique stories of artists and music from a wide range of genres, styles, and musical perspectives.

“Woodstock: Now & Then” is a co-production of History™ and VH1, in association with Cabin Creek Films and Woodstock Ventures, Inc. Brad Abramson, Stephen Mintz, Shelly Tatro and Jeff Olde serve as executive producers for VH1 and Julian P. Hobbs is the executive producer for History. For Cabin Creek Films, Barbara Kopple serves as director and producer and Michael Lang as executive producer.

VH1 connects viewers to the music, artists and pop culture that matter to them most with TV series, specials, live events, exclusive online content and public affairs initiatives. VH1 is available in 95 million households in the U.S. VH1 also has an array of digital channels and services including VH1Classic, VH1 Soul, VH1 Mobile, VH1Games and extensive broadband video on VH1.com. [edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Larry_Lee&action=edit&section=1)] Gypsy Sun and Rainbows (LARRY LEE)

Lee was an old friend of Jimi Hendrix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix) and Billy Cox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Cox), they had all played together in various R&B acts, and in 1969 he joined Hendrix's new band Gypsy Sun and Rainbows (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gypsy_Sun_and_Rainbows) as rhythm guitarist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rhythm_guitar), occasionally playing alternating lead. The newly formed band was hired to play the Woodstock Music Festival (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock_Music_Festival) for which Hendrix had been previously booked to play as the Jimi Hendrix Experience (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix_Experience). Lee had only been back from the Vietnam war (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_war) for two weeks, was unemployed when Hendrix called him and had only joined Gypsy Sun and Rainbows a week before the Woodstock concert. At the concert Hendrix and Lee both wore white outfits and exotic headgear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headgear) was much in evidence, Lee wore a distinctive green bandana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandana) that had long tassles hanging over his eyes, which at the time he thought was a statement of originality as he explains in the Woodstock DVD, whereas Billy Cox wore a multi coloured turban (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turban) and Hendrix a bright pink bandana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bandana) and large shining ear studs. Lee played a Gibson Les Paul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibson_Les_Paul) guitar and sang his own composition 'Master Mind' as well as two Impressions numbers sung as a medley - 'Gypsy Woman' and 'Aware of Love', with Hendrix playing Curtis Mayfield style back up, he also took several solos and played some alternating lead ("weaving") with Hendrix (mostly edited from the official releases as is most of the percussion, which prevents the casual listener from appreciating the true sound of this group.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Larry_Lee#cite_note-0) After Woodstock these "hired guns" briefly continued to help Hendrix develop his new style, which included the first of his classic, new "message" songs, in which Hendrix attempted to communicate his complex philosophy towards the current Vietnam war and human relationships in general: Machine Gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_Gun), Message to Love (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_to_Love) and Izabella (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Izabella&action=edit&redlink=1). This group then played at the Harlem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harlem), 'United Block' benefit and later performed at the small 'Salvation' club in Greenwich Village (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwich_Village) to a mixed reception. Lee, Velez and Sultan then went off to pursue their briefly interrupted careers, Sultan later played occasional sessions for Hendrix.

Woodstock '89 was a rock concert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_concert) that took place in August 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989) on the site of the original Woodstock (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock_festival) concert of 1969 as a spontaneous celebration of the event's 20th anniversary.
The event began with a single folk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folk_music) guitarist who came to the site. It grew to a concert that 30,000 people attended, featuring mainly lesser-known bands. Wavy Gravy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavy_Gravy), the Woodstock All-Stars, and Al Hendrix, the father of Jimi Hendrix (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimi_Hendrix), appeared at the concert.
The gathering arose on the same days in August as the original festival, even though in 1989 this fell in the middle of the week.
A total lunar eclipse (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lunar_eclipse) occurred during the concert on the night of August 16-17.
Musicians worked the lunar eclipse into performances; one sang his version of "Call Down the Moon."
Although the property owners briefly attempted to charge $5 for parking, and a few people had made up simple t-shirts and simple food to sell at the event, there was virtually none of the commercialism that later marked the Woodstock '94 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock_%2794) and Woodstock '99 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodstock_%2799) concerts.
The event was not promoted, and at first it appeared there would be no stage, no lighting, and no performers until those things began arriving with the growing crowd. Food and beverages were not sold; participants brought their own supplies and bartered with each other.
Because participants were allowed to park vehicles next to their tents all across the site except in the main performance area, much of the field that was so densely covered by people in 1969 was filled again, but this time by cars, psychedelic buses and upscale RV's as well, by this event.
ABC's morning new program "Good Morning America (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Morning_America)" broadcast live from Max Yasgur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Yasgur)'s Farm, interviewing Wavy Gravy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wavy_Gravy) and Ken Kesey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Kesey).
Ken Kesey was the founder of the Merry Pranksters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merry_Pranksters). They are remembered for travelling across the United States in a psychedelic painted school bus enigmatically labelled "Furthur (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furthur)". The Pranksters were heavy users of marijuana and LSD, and in the process of their journey they are said to have "turned on" many people whom they introduced to these drugs.
The Pranksters' travels continued until 1969, when the bus - without Kesey - made it to the Woodstock rock festival. Kesey was pleased to have finally made the trip to Woodstock - for the the 20th Anniversary.
