View Full Version : Echo tape

:docd:This is a tape that used to drive me nuts. I received it in the early '90s. In the years before many studio tapes had turned up, which later expanded in complete sessions like the three Mannish Boys tapes of over a half hour of recordings each. Around the time I got this tape unfortunately the well turned dry. The tape seems to be an appetizer for some-one to spend a lot of money for the complete tapes. Most of the tracks are deliberately distorted with echo. However, to my ears there is one highlight: the complete take of Easy Blues. The 2 minutes + version of Beginning is much too short :-(
I don't know much about the lineage but it seems to be a real low generation.

Thank you very much for taking the time
to surprise us with such delights as this old and rare
tape. Your presence on this site is a true fortune!
Will post my impressions as soon as I listen to it.
Thanks a lot one more time!

Tape is FANTASTIC! Extremely interesting listen.
First of all, considering added echo, I don't mind at all.
After a minute or two of listening I don't hear it anymore.
Quality is so good that you can freely concentrate on the
music. EVERY NOTE of EVERY INSTRUMENT can be
heard as clearly as a bell!

Considering the first track, Jimi/Jimmy Jam,
now we know that the main theme used for it
wasn't just "one-take" inspiration. Who knows,
maybe Jimi had in mind developing it into
something more structured (a song)?

Voodoo Chile Jams (tracks 02 & 02a) are also beautiful recordings.
Oh my God, I can understand why was this tape driving you
crazy, Kees! In those days to hear these outtakes must have
been like discovering a "Wholly Grail" - lol!
Today, we have 40 minutes of the Voodoo Chile session in
general circulation and these two tracks are first part of it
(in fact, track two starts 2.42 later than the S1320).

Track 03 is Ezy Rider Jam with organ in VERY NICE quality.
Track 04 sounds to me like the one we all know very well
or very close to it (maybe a bit different mix - didn't have the
time to compare). In any case there's no different overdubs.

Track 05, Earth Blues, an early version with completely different
vocal take is a GREAT discovery for me. What a beautiful recording
with Jimi's voice sounding fresh like it was recorded in 1967!
I'm not at all sure that this recording circulates widely. Sounds like
an early BOG take from the November or December 1969.

Track 06 is a fragment of the Message From Nine To The Universe
Jam featuring only part with Devon Wilson on vocal (the very end
of the 17 minutes long jam).

Track 07 is indeed as Kees pointed out THE highlight of the tape.
Hearing it complete I really don't understand why Alan Douglas
edited it at all?? The longest part he edited-out is approximately
between 1.30 and 4.00. Why he did that is a mystery to me - was it
because the main solo isn't played by Jimi - probably - in any case
very sad and unnecessary! Thanks Kees! Beautiful!

Tracks 08 and 09 - SURPRISE AGAIN! What a great sounding
Beginning! Unfortunately short but great anyway - here arises the
same question as before: Why Alan Douglas wiped out the original
musicians from these tracks - what was going on in his head?
I really can't say....
Track 08 is cut-off because it reached the end of the A-side of the
cassette. Starts again at the beginning of the B-side and goes on
until (sadly) 2.23 only. FANTASTIC recording nevertheless.

Track 10 is well known Baggy's version. Nice but short (just a
3.47 long fragment of the session) track in excellent quality.

Track 11, Izabella - with echo - not an original 45-mix but
similar with War Heroes version.

Track 12, same as track 11, sounds like RAW version of the
War Heroes edit of the jam with some tape-manipulation
at the end.

Track 13 - Buddy Miles on drums version (with echo unfortunately).

Track 14 - Alternate mix, same as on Multicoloured Blues.

Track 15 - To my ears, this is a mix I never heard before with
vocal and guitar very low and whistles very prominent in the mix.
Some studio-chat is also present at the end of the track.
Very interesting, strange and unique (to my ears) mix.
Unfortunately with added echo.

Track 16. Driving South - part of the McLaughlin jam
(18 minutes only) with added heavy echo.

GREAT tape - with many interesting and new tracks never heard before.
Highlights (IMHO):
- Jimi/Jimmy Jam
- Easy Blues
- Earth Blues
- Beginnings
- STP with LSD.

THANK YOU KEES!

What a listening pleasure KEES :-)

I need to listen to this "crazy" tape a few more times to give it my review (though do I need to write it...Emil did it very well indeed!!!...and btw Emil artwork for this gem is more than welcome).

Thanx a lot for taking time to transfer and share here a few "crazy" tapes from your Jimi collection.

Your presence here is much much appreciated :-)

Have a nice ending week-end Kees (and all the others Jimi fellows at Cross Town).

Don't get me wrong guys, but I REALLY can't understand how it is possible that two days after being uploaded here on HENDRIX-ONLY torrent site, such a "diamond" of a tape got only a few comments.
Here (supposedly) should be gathered the "cream" of Hendrix fans and experts yet we haven't had a single (serious) discussion about any topic.
I hoped that this fantastic tape might trigger SOMETHING - feelings, critics, questions, ANYTHING!
Unfortunately all we got is silence.

So far 42 people finished the torrent and more than half of them (22) didn't even have the strength to at click on the "Thank You button" at least....

Sad, really sad...

KEES ! ! Nice seeing you here ! ! I'm gonna jump on this & keep it up for seeding. (Hoping my #'s go up pretty soon!!)
PS: Regarding the Temple Show U put up 4 me - If I turn the volume WAY UP It is just UNGODLY~~
Having been there, I can deal with the sound quality also. If only there weren't so many edits. . . . :-]
Oh well. I still feel fortunate - and I LOVE IT! Thanks 4 ALL ! ! !
Peace - Steve
PS: My "Echo" DL is complete. I'll keep it up for seeding 4 a week or so.

PS: How did I (just) become a member & you're still a "Jr" member? You ALWAYS have the best stuff! :D
:thayou219bl: Peace - me

well, i mean you said it all in your write-up of the tape. which was a nice review. The echoed tracks give me a hard time to listen too, although of course I agree back in the 90ties, I would have been more enthusiastic. The complete Easy Blues is VERY enjoyable though! I was not really aware that we did not yet have it...Thanks for the upload.

It is always nice to go back through those old cassette tapes from time to time.

"...The complete Easy Blues is VERY enjoyable though! I was not really aware that we did not yet have it..."

My apologies. indeed we already do have complete Easy Blues on the ATM and other collector's and bootleg discs. I wasn't listening to it for quite some time and
out of extreme enthousiasm I overlooked that detail. Nevertheless, Alan Douglas did edit the part I mentioned and this is one great and exciting tape with lots of new insights into Hendrix creative work.

Thank you very much. Wish we could hear the whole recording. Doesn't any collector have it? I'm wondering why someone doesn't repair the "echo" segments. It shouldn't be that hard to do especially with original quality tracks used for reference. Either way this is a very nice find!

Thanks for this one too Kees! :000-thanx:

My favorite was "Earth Blues" - don't think I'd heard that one anywhere before.

Let me jump in here and defend Alan Douglas a bit. :bartmoon:

Just remember that when the lp "Nine to the Universe" came out, it was indeed an LP. CD's weren't even available at that time. So there was no way that Douglas would have been able to include the entire "Easy Blues" without cutting something else short. I don't think MCA would have let Douglas release a double LP with complete versions of "Easy Blues", "Jimi/Jimmy Jam", "Drone Blues" and "Nine to the Universe"! I'm not even sure they would have fit properly on a double lp either without splitting something over two sides of a record. I know at the time I was very pleased with the "Nine to the Universe" lp even though I could notice some of the edits.

By the way, I met Douglas once in his Beverly Hills office. He was quite pleasant. When he realized I was a Hendrix freak he sent me away with an autographed (by Alan Douglas) copy of the "And a Happy New Year" promo EP and a posterboard for a Douglas Productions Hendrix bio film that never came to be. (I think it was called "A Vision Heard" or something like that. Wonder if its worth anything? I guess I should dig it up, scan it and upload it?)

Agree...the LP is pretty enjoyable.
Though it's really nice to hear the complete, wonderful Easy Blues
with Larry's solo, the edits improved that track a whole lot (just my opinion).
