INTERVIEW by Brian Mathews

Brian: Our next guest: Jimmy Hendrix. Jimi is now permanently resident in Britain, but he
comes from The States and I believe you played with some big names there, didn’t
you Jimmy?
Jimi : Well, like, Little Richard, Isley Brothers, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke
Brian: So why did you break away?
Jimi : Well, you know you get tired of playin’ other people’s music all the time
Brian: So, what did you do?
Jimi : So, then l just, you know, went down to ‘The Villa’-Village’, you know just layin’ dead
for a while, playin’
Brian: And this is where?
Jimi : Yes
Brian: Chas Chandler met up with you was it?
Jimi : Yeah, so he asked would I like to go to England, you know, huh-huh, I wasn’t doin’
anythin’ so I said, “Yeah,” you know, like
Brian: Yeah, would you say there was any similarity in what you’re trying to do and for
instance, what ‘The Cream’ is doing
Jimi : No, not necessarily, ‘cause, you know, what we’re tryin’ to do is, we’re tryin’ to get
our own particular sound, you know, like, um, a freakish blues, this, you know, this,
rave like, almost, with a little more feeling than what’s been happenin’ lately.
Brian: Yeah, so ah ‘Hey Joe’ isn’t really representative of what you’re trying to do
Jimi : No. Yes, it’s a phase, just one very small part of us.
Brian: So, right now could we hear ‘Hey Joe’?
Jimi : Yeah, huh-huh yuk-yuk

HEY JOE* (William ‘Billy’ Roberts)

Hey-hey Joe, where you goin’ with that gun in your hand?
Hey-hey Joe, I said, where you goin’ with that gun in your hand?
I’m goin’ down to shoot my ol’ lady
You know, I caught her messin’ ‘round another man
Yeah…I’m going down to shoot my ol’ lady
You know, I caught her messin’ ‘round with another man
An’-uh, that ain’t too cool

Hey-hey Joe, I said, I heard you shot your woman down
You shot her down now
Hey-hey Joe, I said, I heard you shot your woman down
You shot her down now

Yes, I did, I shot her
You know, I caught her messin’ ‘round, messin’ around town
Yeah
Yes, I did, I shot my ol’ lady
You know, I caught her messin’ ‘round, messin’ around town
And I gave her the gun, I shot her

[Solo]

Yeah
Oh, that’s what I’m talkin’ about

Ah, get away now

All right

Hey-ey Joe, I said now
uh-Where you gonna run to now, where you gonna go?
Hey-ey Joe, I said, where you gonna run to now?
Where you gonna, you gonna go?

Well, dig, I’m goin’ way down south, way down to Mexico way
I’m going way down south, way down where I can be free
Ain’t no one gonna mess with me, yeah
Ain’t no hangman gonna
He ain’t gonna put a rope around me
Dig, you better believe it, baby
I got to go now
Hey, hey-ey Joe, ha-ha-ha, you better run on
You better go now an’-uh
Goodbye everybody, yeah

*Hendrix acknowledged that he used Tim Rose’s [one of “The Village people”] uniquely slower
arrangement, including some of his minor lyric changes and the addition of harmony backing
vocals. Previous releases by ‘The Leaves’, ‘Love’ and ‘The Byrds’ were very much faster, had
slightly different lyrics and didn’t feature, harmony vocals.

STONE FREE

Every day in the week, I’m in a different city
If I stay too lo-ong, the people try to pull me down
They talk about me like a dog, talk about the clothes I wear
But they don’t reali-i-ise they’re the one’s who’s square
Yeah, and that’s why, you can’t hold me down
I don’t wanna be tied do-own, I got to move on, hey

I said stone free, to do what I please
Stone free, to ride the breeze*, ha-ha
(Stone free)
Stone free, baby, I can’t stay, I
(Stone free)
Got to, got to, got to get away, right now
Yeah

Listen here, baby
Woman here, woman there, try to keep me in a plastic cage
But they don’t reali-i-ise, it’s so easy to break
Yeah, but, er-uh, sometimes I can, hah
Feel my heart kind o’ gettin’ hot
That’s when I got to move, before I get caught
So, dig this, and that’s why, yeah
You can’t hold me down
I don’t wanna be tied do-own
I got to move on, yeah
I said stone free, to do what I please
(Stone free)
Stone free, to ride the breeze*
(Stone free)
Stone free, I can’t stay, I
(Stone free)
I’ve got to, got to, get away, yeah
Turn me loose, baby

[Solo]

Hey
Yea-eah I said,
Stone free, to do what I please
(Stone free)
Stone free, to ride the breeze
(Stone free)
Stone free, I can’t stay, I’ve
(Stone free)
Got to, got to, got to, got to get away
(Stone free)
Yeah, I’m goin’ on down the highway, baby
(Stone free)
Don’t try to hold me back
(Stone free)
I feel stone free
(Stone free)
I’ve got to be-uh
(Stone free)
Don’t try to
(Stone free)
I’ve got to move on down
(Stone free)
To fly baby
(Stone free)
Yeah

Hendrix’ first composition with the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

*Jimi talking about his time in the Airborne: “...‘cause once you get out there everything is so
quiet, all you hear is the breezes-s-s-s..”. He used this parachuting image in three lyrics, in
this, the first song he wrote for his ‘Jimi Hendrix Experience’, Stone Free “...ride the breeze”,
next was Purple Haze, “. . .kiss the sky,” and then in Little Wing “..riding with the wind”. He
also sometimes quoted the tune ‘The Breeze And I’, another related reference.

Engineer: Okay Jimi that’s…
Jimi: All in ‘B’ One , two, three, four…

[B]LOVE OR CONFUSION

Is that the sta-ars in the sky-y, or is it-uh, rain fallin’ down?
Would it burn me if I touched the sun-uh, so big so round?
Oh, my heart burns with feeling, yeah
Oh, but my mi-ind is cold and reeling
Is this lo-ove, baby, yeah, or is it confusion?
Oh, my head it is stoned, poundin’
Goin’ around and ‘round
Must there always be these colours
Without names without sound?

You know I love you, baby
My mind is tellin’ me-uh somethin’ all together different huh
Is this lo-ove, ba-by, or is it, confusion?

[Solo]

Would I be truthful, yeah in uh, in choosing you as the one for me?
Oh, my head it is poundin’, poundin’
Goin’ ‘round and ‘round n’ ‘round and ‘round
Must there always be these colours-uh
Without names without sound?

My mind is cold, yeah
Oh, but my heart grows so-o bold-uh
Is this lo-ove, baby, heh, or is it, confusion?
Oh, is this lo-ove or confusion?
