LONG HOT SUMMER NIGHT *

(Oo-oo-oo-oo-ooh)
It sure was a long, long, long (shit) hot summer ni-i-ight
As far as my eyes could see-ee
(Yeah, yeah, yea-eah-eah)
But my heart was way down in a cold, cold winter storm
(Aa-aa-aa-aa-aah)
Oh, my darling, where can you be-e
(Where can you be, baby, where can you be-e-e?)

There were three sugar walls and-uh two candy cane windo-ows1
(Oo-oo-oo-oo-oo-ooh)
But Sylvia’s2 mood melted-uh, all those in si-ight
(All those in si-ight)
Everybody’s on fire but I’m-uh snowin’ in a cold blizzard

Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer?
Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer?
Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer?
Ni-i-i-ight, (ni-ight, ni-i-ight)

Around about this time the telephone blew it’s horn across the room
Scared little Annie3 clean out of her mind, ain’t that terrible, yeah, heh- heh
(Out of her mi-ind)
Roman4 the candle he peeps out of his peekaboo hide and seek
And grabbed little Annie3 from the ceiling just in time
(Grabbed little Annie3 just in ti-ime)
And the telephone it keeps on screamin’, yeah, yeah, yeah

(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yea-eah)

Hello, said my shaky voice, well how are you doin’
(Doin’, doin’, doin’ do)
I start to stutter uh-ca-can’t you tell-uh I’m doin’ fi-i-ine
(Can’t you tell I’m doin’ fine)
It was my baby talkin’, she’s way down across the border
(Aa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa-aa...
She says, “I’m gonna hurry to you, I’ve been a fool and I’m tired of cry-y-in’-hah’
So tired of cryin” ...aa-aa-aa-aa-aah)

Yeah-eah it’s a long (long) long (long) hot summer night
(Oo-oo-oo-oo-ooh)
As far as my eyes could see-ee-ee
But I can feel the heat comin’ on as my baby’s getting closer
(Aa-aa-aah)

I’m so glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue me
(So glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue)
I said, so glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue me
(Hey glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue)
So glad my baby’s comin’ to rescue me
(Glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue)
Rescue who, rescue, rescue who, rescue, rescue, rescue, what’d I say
Rescue me, rescue who, rescue, rescue who, rescue me, rescue

{The most cryptic lyric on the album, possibly }

* Carol Shiroky has it that this song is set in 65/66 and is about her, where Jimi is ‘stranded’ at a wild party he doesn’t want to be at after a falling out, but she is coming to ‘rescue’ him... (Wind Cries Mary?)
1 As per the witch’s house in Hansel & Gretel;) “I love reading fairy tales, H.C. Andersen and Winnie the Pooh. Fairy tales are full of fantasy and like music they appeal to your sense of imagination.”
2 Sylvia of ‘Ian & Sylvia’? They were the mainstays of the Greenwich Village club scene for many years, paricularly the Cafe Au Go Go, pre & post Jimi. She was, of course, a ‘looker’;) Jimi was a significant part of the scene prior to his ‘discovery’
3Annie [‘Miss Anne, honey’ ie Jimi?] is getting too high! ‘Annie’ was Little Richard’s camp alter ego, one of his comeback songs was, ‘Annie’s Back’ etc. Jimi’s camp impersonations of Richard have been remarked upon by several eye-witnesses as being hilarious.
4Murray Roman? He was a Greenwich Village club artist when Jimi left & when he returned, Roman came to London and was signed by Track records, releasing two LP’s by him. Commonly percieved as, but never billed as, “Rock music’s Lenny Bruce” He ‘invented’ ‘rock music stand up’[?] Noel and the Who’s Keith Moon were buddies/party animals (‘looners’). Jimi’s, “‘Roman’, ‘the candle’” (ie he burns both ends/firework personality?).

It sure was a long, long, Long Hot Summer Night as far as my eyes could see,
But my heart was way down in a cold, cold winter storm.
Oh, my darling, where can you be?

There were three sug-ar walls and two candy cane windows,
But Sylvia’s mood melted, all those in sight.
Ev‘rybody’s on fire but I’m snowing in a cold blizzard.

Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer?
Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer?
Where are you on this-uh hot cold summer night?

A-round a-bout this time the telephone blew it’s horn across the room,
It scared little Annie clean out of her mind.
(Roman the candle, he peeps out of his peek-a-boo hide and seek)
And grabs little Annie from the ceil-ing just in time.
And the telephone it keeps on screamin’,
Yeh, yeh, yeh, yeh

“Hello,” said my shaky voice, “Well, how you doing?”
(I start to stutter uh, uh)
“Can’t you tell I’m doing fine?”
It was my baby talking and she’s way down ‘cross the border.
She says, “I’m goin’ to hurry to you, I’ve been a fool and I’m tired of cry’n’.”’

It was a long, Long Hot Summer Night as far as my eyes could see,
But I can feel the heat comin’ on as my baby’s gettin’ closer,
I’m so glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue me.
So glad that my baby’s comin’ to rescue me.
