GYPSY EYES

Well, I realise that I’ve been hypnotized
I love you Gypsy ey-eyes, I love you Gypsy ey-eyes
Well, all right...hey...Gypsy

Way up in my tree I’m sitting by my fi-re-re
Wonderin’ where in this world might you be-e
And knowin’ that all the time you’re still roamin’ the country si-ide
Do you still think about me?
Oh, my...Gypsy

Well, I walk right on up to your rebel roadside
The one that rambles on for a million mi-iles
Yes, I walk down this road
Searchin’ for your love and-uh, my soul too
When I find you I ain’t gonna let go-of

I remember the first time I saw you
The tears in your eyes looked like they was tryin’ to sa-ay,
“Oh, little boy, you know I could love you-ou
But first I must make my get awa-ay
Two strange men fightin’ to the death over me toda-ay*
I’ll try to meet you by the old highwa-ay,” hey

Well, I realise that I’ve been hypnotised
I love you Gypsy ey-eyes, I love you Gypsy ey-eyes
I love you Gypsy-y eyes, I love you Gypsy ey-ey-eyes...well, all right

I’ve been searchin’ so long my feet they painfully lose the battle
Down against the road my weary knees take their place
oh-Off to the side I fall but, I hear a sweet call
My-y Gypsy eyes has found me and I’ve been sa-a-aved
Lo-ord, I’ve been saved, that’s why I love you
Said I love you, hey, I love you
Lo-ord, I love you-ou

*The whole song appears to be about his mother, who was absent for lengthy periods, and this line sounds like the fight between Al Hendrix and John Page (an alleged pimp) over her. Page had just finished a five year sentence for transporting her under the Mann act and had been threatened with shooting if he didn’t
leave town, before leaving he tried to grab Lucille, but Al fought him off. It has been claimed that Jimi was initially named ‘Johnny’ after him and that’s reason why Al had him re-named ‘James’ when he came home from the war against Japan during W.W.2.

Well I realize that I’ve been hypnotized;
I love you, Gypsy Eyes, I love you Gypsy Eyes.

Way up in my tree I’m sitting by my fire,
Wond’rin’ where in this world might you be.
And knowing all the time you still are roamin’ the countryside.
Do you still think about me?

(Oh, my) (Gypsy Eyes)

Well, I walk right on up to your rebel roadside
The one that rambles on for a million miles
Well, I walk down this road
Searching for your love and-uh my soul too
And when I find you, I ain’t gonna let go.

I remember the first time I saw you
The tears in your eyes look like they was try’n to say
“Oh, little boy, you know I could love you
But first, I must make my get away,
Two strange men fighting to the death over me today….
I’ll try to meet you by the old highway.”

Well, I realize that I’ve been hypnotized
I love you, Gypsy Eyes…I love you, Gypsy Eyes
I love you, Gypsy Eyes…I love you, Gypsy Eyes.

I’ve been searching so long,
My feet, they painfully leave the battle
Down against the road my weary knees take their place
Off to the side I fall
But I hear a sweet call
My Gypsy Eyes has found me and I’ve been saved
Lord, I’ve been saved
That’s why I love you
Lord knows, I love you.
