Saturday 1 April 1967
Ipswich, Gaumont Cinema [still open], St. Helen’s Street, Suffolk, England
Filmed for 'Bouton Rouge' (Red Button, ie to the A bomb) French TV pop show. Only these two B&W films,
complete with sound, from separate shows, as originally broadcast, are known to still exist, so far.
Does the rest still exist? Only film from his 1st UK tour – as a support act to the Walker Brothers.
Both shows he is playing a small head, sunburst with rosewood fingerboard and with a
red, tooled ‘cowboy’ style strap.
1st show Jimi is wearing his ‘Gypsy’ waistcoat (with the gem brooch, but it’s not visible),
the white lace shirt, a short turquoise[?] neckerchief and very dark trousers (black, navy or
maroon?) with a neckerchief for a belt.
2nd show he is wearing, imho, the same orange velvet suit he probably wore for the 1st
show at the Astoria the night before (backstage B&W photos only, holding an
unidentifiable strat, with 2 picks stuck in the scratchplate), the ‘Gypsy’ waistcoat with the
gem brooch, the orange ruffled shirt (see Monterey) and the short turquoise[?] neckerchief.

[Aud = Audience]

1st show:

[Purple Haze] all in my brain
Lately things don’t seem the same
I’m actin’ funny, but I don’t know why
‘Scuse me while I kiss the sky*

Hey, yeah

Purple Haze all around
Don’t know if I’m comin’ up or down
Got me blowin’, [blowin’] my mind, yeah
What ever it is that gi-irl put a spell on me

Help me, help me, baby
Oh, no

Ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh
(Ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh)

Purple haze all in my eyes
Don’t know if it’s day or night
You got me blowin’, blowin’ my mind
Is it tomorrow or just the end of time?

[screams from audience]

Help me, baby
Help me, baby, now

(Purple haze)

Oh, no
Yea-eah, purple haze
(Purple haze)
You got me blowin’ my mind

Purple haze

Purple haze

(Ooh, aah, ooh, aah, ooh aah, ooh)

[screams from audience]

1Very reminiscent of “the Purple Haze” from Philip Farmer’s sci-fi, book ‘Night Of Light’ which also features a certain
“Mary” and is obviously a source for some early lyric imagery, you’d need to read it;)
*His original ‘kiss the sky’, was often heard as the mondegreen - ‘kiss this guy’, which Jimi, sometimes, jokingly, did
actually articulate, gesturing toward Mitch or Noel as heard on tape and seen in film a few times.
Jimi talking about his time in the army Airborne: “...‘cause once you get out there everything is so quiet, all you hear
is the breezes-s-s-s..”. He used this parachuting image in three lyrics: in the first song he wrote for his ‘Jimi Hendrix
Experience’, Stone Free “...ride the breeze”, next was Purple Haze, “. . .kiss thesky,” and then in Little Wing “..riding
with the wind”. He also sometimes quoted the tune ‘The Breeze And I’, another related reference.

Noel: Thank you very much… Can’t do it

2nd show:

Aud : [Screams out] Impossible! [someone is misbehaving]
? : Right
Jimi : [Struggles to get his coat off, a roady lends a hand] Get out of here! pathetic
Aud : [Laughter & applause at Jimi’s struggles]
? : Eric
Jimi : No, it ain’t nothing like Big Bill. . . We’d like to dedicate this song to everybody here, because I think it has something
for everybody, something for everybody, you know. Dig this [plays some feedback]
Aud : [Laughter]
Jimi : That’s something for one person. I’m gonna play this song for you, that little girl there in the green, everybody over
here-oh, oo-ooh, Lord, look at all those girls [guitar ‘says’: ‘Thank you’?]…
