1. KILLING FLOOR * (Chester ‘Howlin’ Wolf’ Burnett)

I should have quit you, long time ago
Lord, I should have quit you, baby, long time ago
I should have quit you, an’-uh
Went on back down to Mexico

If I’d of followed, yeah, my first mi-ind
Lord, if I’d of followed, pretty baby, my first mi-ind
I would have been gone, since my second time

[Solo]

Lord knows, I should have been gone
Lo-o-ord knows, I should have been gone
But you got me messin’ ’round here with you, baby
You got me cry-yin’ on the killin’ floor

* Where the animals are slaughtered in the meat processing factories in Chicago, involving hard physical
labour, and unpleasant, messy work. His early ‘signature’ tune, by one of his heroes ‘Howlin Wolf’

[Tape cut (chat)]

2. I’M YOUR HOOCHIE COOCHIE MAN (Willie Dixon, for Muddy Waters)

The Gypsy woman told my mother
Before I was born
She said, “You got a boy child’s a comin’ ha-ha
He’s gonna be a son of a gun,” yeah
“He’s gonna make you little girls, eh-jump and shout, yeah.
Ah, then the World, then the World gonna know
uh-What it’s all about.”
‘Cause you know I’m here
Everybody knows I’m here
I’m a hoochie coochie man
Everybody knows I’m he-ere

I’ve got a black cat bone*, I’ve got a mojo* too-oo
I’ve got Little John the Conquerer root *
Ain’t gonna fuck around with you
We’re gonna make you little girls, uh-jump and shout
Oh-Lord, then The World gonna kno-ow
What it’s all about.
Don’t you know I’m here
Everybody knows I’m here
I’m a hoochie coochie man
Everybody knows I’m here

[Solo]

Now on the seventh hour
Of the seventh day
On the seventh month
Had seven doctor, come up and say
“Lord, he was born for good luck
And that you’ll see”
I’ve got seven hundred dollar ha-ha-ha
So don’t you fuckin’ mess with me
‘Cause you’ll get it
Everybody knows I’m here
I’m a hoochie coochie man
Everybody knows I’m here

Yeah

[Guitar solo]

[Drum solo]

*‘Black cat bones’, ‘Mojo’s’ & ‘John the Conqueror root’ are all Hoodoo charms; seven is the ‘magic’
number.

[Tape cut]

Jimi : …?
Aud: [Laughter]

3. BURNING OF THE MIDNIGHT LAMP*

The mornin’ is dead and the day is too
There’s nothing left here to leave me, but the velvet Moo-oon
All my loneliness, I have felt today
It’s a little more than enough, to make a man, throw himself away
And I continue, to burn the midnight la-amp, all alo-o-one

Now the smiling portrait of you
Is still hangin’ on my frowning wall
An’ it really doesn’t, really doesn’t bother me too much at a-all
It’s just the ah, ever falling dust, that makes it so hard for me to see
That forgotten earring laying on the floor
Facing coldly toward the door
And I continue, to burn the midnight la-amp, Lord, alo-o-o-o one
Yeah, burn

[Solo]
Lonely

Lonely, lonely
Loneliness is such a drag

Now here I sit to face, that same old fireplace
Gettin’ ready for the same old explosion
Goin’ through my mind
And soon enough time will tell
About the circus in the wishing well1
And someone who will buy and sell
Someone to toll my bell2

And I continue, to burn the midnight lamp, Lord, alo-o-o-one
Hey
Darlin’, can you hear me callin’ you?
So lonely-y, gonna have to blow my mind, yeah
Yeah
Yeah

*Jimi wrote the lyrics to this on 2/3 July on the flight from LA to NY after Monterey. A sombre reflection
on the effect the travelling life of the musician has on relationships? As a contrast to his lighthearted take on
the initial flight from London to New York and Monterey – STPLSD – the ‘B’ side of the single
1The music business & fame?
2This would appear to be a reference to John Donne’s poem “Devotions upon Emergent Occasions”, eg ”No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.”
Jimi appeared to disagree strongly that no man was an island: “One of the worst statements people are making is ‘no man is an island.’ Every man is an island and music is about the only way we can really communicate.” If he was referring to the poem in this case, I feel he may have misinterpreted it?

4. WILD THING (James ‘Chip Taylor’ Voight) [Backing vocal – Noel]

[Solo quotes Frank Sinatra’s1 [B]STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT (Burt Bacharah & Hal David)]

Wild thing I think I love …
But I wanna know for sure, y’all
(I wanna know for sure)
Come here now, sssock it to me one more time

Yeah

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Wild thing
(Wild thing)
Hey!
Wild thing
(Wild thing)

1Incidentally? Sinatra was the founder of Jimi’s US label, Reprise Records, and Jimi became a fellow
‘Reprise artist’ - after his fame in Europe. He originally quoted ‘Elvis’ ‘Blue Moon’ (sentimentally?) and the
Beatles’ ‘Day Tripper’ here (he was obviously into acid, McCartney is on record as saying this song was
really a nod to LSD - for those ‘in the know’ – which ‘they’ certainly were)

Jimi: [Guitar ‘says’ ‘Thank you. Thank you very much’]

[Tape cut]
