Just as Experience Hendrix are about to put out the new version of "Hendrix In The West", which features 5 songs from the San Diego 69 performance, up pops this CD from the budget label Delta Digital Media.
Their site states that they will be releasing more Hendrix product later in the year, including "Electric Ladyland And Beyond", which is obviously a re-release of the last Purple Haze Records double CD (however PHR tell me that they have made no agreement with Delta!).
So this San Diego set must be the same as the live half of "Truth & Emotion" (another old PHR release). On that CD, the San Diego gig was very good mono soundboard and featured the entire gig (the multi-track "Stages 69" lacked "Foxy Lady").
(Initial heads-up was on Ayler's forum :))

Why EH wasted their and our time only releasing 5 tracks from the excellent San D show beats me, what are they on? Are they trying to drive us into the hands of the bootleggers and pirates?

Yes they are. It's this short sighted approach that opens so many doors that EH then run round trying to close .................. at great cost to them and a hell of a lot of frustration to us.

I have in the past blamed Janie for this but I offer my apologies here, sorry Janie. It appears that it's more down to MCA / Universal and now Sony.

I think they've released the best of the whole show. The only songs missing are "Hey Joe" which has some major tuning problems and "Foxy Lady" which I'm guessing doesn't have a quality soundboard version (Alan Douglas left it off "Stages" and the SB boot version sounds rough)

It is possible to put together a complete "The JHE Live In San Diego '69" CD...

SAN DIEGO SPORTS ARENA 05/24/69
Set List:
Intro Riffs (available on Stages CD3)
Fire (available on In The West Reissue)
Hey Joe (Stages)
Spanish Castle Magic/Sunshine Of Your Love (In The West Reissue)
Red House (In The West Reissue)
I Don't Live Today (In The West Reissue)
Foxey Lady (Live In San Diego bootleg)
Purple Haze (available on The Jimi Hendrix Experience MCA box set)
Voodoo Child (In The West Reissue)

I do think EH should have included "Hey Joe" on the new In The West set and used "Foxy Lady" as the "Johnny B Goode" single B side. Just so we could have the complete show.

My guess is that they will hold on to "Hey Joe" & "Foxey Lady" to be released as single tracks on an upcoming box set, or as bonus tracks on one of these limited edition singles that EH now seems to be so fond of releasing.

So has anyone picked up the expanded Live in the West??? What's the mix like on the San Diego tracks and how do they compare to the STAGES mix?

I'd really like to know!! If it's vastly superior, I'll pick up ITW. If it's relatively minor, I'm not inclined to do so.

Anyone care to chime in?

How about just releasing the complete show? Instead of withholding material for years...... and double, triple dipping with releases. Although EH Universal had some questionable mastering and participated in the loudness wars they seemed to be much better about completeness to their releases. EH Sony while not quite as extreme as Douglas has some shown similar tendencies which only seem to be getting worse. They have however, maintained a good pace to the releases.

Well, in response to my own query, and after having listened to the newly released and expanded edition of In The West, I can say, unequivocally, that the San Diego cuts on this release are uniformly AWESOME! I absolutely LOVE Eddie Kramer's mixing on these cuts. Definitely superior to the STAGES release.

I can't recommend In The West enough!!

As for this Live In San Diego, it seems to have never appeared. Blocked by EH?

I've neglected it somewhat due to being so fascinated with Winterland. I'm really planning on listening to it a lot more when I can. There is just too much to listen to and not enough time.

The closest I have ever come to having the feeling that more hours to the day had been added was the first summer I spent in Ireland. It was wonderful having daylight for several more hours than a person would have in America.

Listened to the new "In The West" yesterday. The whole thing in one nice loud session on good speakers. Frankly I was never that crazy about the original "In The West". This one I liked a little better. The San Diego mixes were superb. In fact I wish they had released the entire San Diego concert instead. The inclusion of "Blue Suede Shoes" seemed oddly out of place.

Jimi loved old rock 'n ' roll. "Johnny B. Goode", "Summertime Blues", "Hound Dog", "Peter Gunne", ... and he also had a stab at "Blue Suede Shoes" in the studio (with BOG). So it's not really unusual that he jammed on it during a soundcheck (like he had done at the RAH soudcheck with "Hound Dog").

I've never thought of it as off beat, although that may be a good way to put it. It's just very dry and I find it totally hilarious. It's about the only kind of humor that I can totally identify with. That part where he says something to the effect that he'd like to dedicate the song to the plainclothes policemen and other goofballs out there. Then he momentarily forgets the name of the song. Very funny. Even if I didn't like his music, I'd still like Hendrix's humor very much. Something like that is pretty rare. By the way, the song I'm referring to, of course, is on "In the West," I believe it's "Spanish Castle Magic."

Roland you forget, this was 40 odd years ago, Jimi was a "Sponge" at took in all sorts of music as inspiration for His take on things, Rock n Roll was just another arrow for His amazing Bow!
The fact we can hear, what is a Goof Around, is very cool. Although this might not follow your idea of "Flow", Just take it for what it is.

I don't have an issue with the song itself. What was odd was that the rest of the album is live tracks. This sounds more like a studio rehearsal, although they say it was a Berkeley rehearsal. (Isn't there another version of "Blue Suede Shoes" that is a studio jam? I'm thinking of an extended version that is also sometimes called "Police Blues".) Wherever this version came from, it still seems out of place on an otherwise live album.

Which show is it where Jimi mangles the name into something like "Spanish Magic Blackfish" ?

Thanks for bringing that up. But I'm not familiar with it. Maybe he was thinking about blackened redfish while introducing the song and it came out "Spanish Magic Blackfish." It's funny, though.

I'm finally getting to listen to the "In the West" album loud and without distractions. This is even better than I realized. Very impressed; the quality on the San Diego recordings is very much to my liking. 5 stars for me.

He introduces it as "‘Spanish Magic Laughish’ yeah, heh, written by Henry Schwartz...",
