Found this file on an obscure site a while back. I haven't checked to see if it's completely correct or anything like that. But enjoy and feel free to add to it.

what are the words to "somewhere"?
^
Hi zombywoof, hope my take on it will do in lieu:
14 March 1968, Record Plant, New York
SOMEWHERE
Mm...mm, mm-mm
Well-uh, I see fingers and ha-ands and shades of faces*
Reachin’ up but no-ot quite-uh touchin’ the promised land
I hear plea-eas and prayers and-uh desperate whispers sayin’
Oh, Lord, please give us a helpin’ hand, yeah, yeah
And-uh way down in the background1
I can-uh see frustrated souls and cities burnin’,
And on across the water2, baby
I see your weapons barkin’ out the sting of death
And up in the clouds I can imagine UFO’s3
Chuffed4 with themselves, laugh and they sayin’:
“Those people so uptight, they sure know how to make a mess.”
Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oo-oo-oo-ooh
[Solo]
Back at the saloon my tears mix in mildew [?] with my drink
‘I can’t really tell my feet from the sawdust on the flo-oor’5
And, as far as I know, they may even try to wrap me in cellophane and sell me6
Brothers, help me, and don’t worry about lookin’ at the score
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...oo-oo-oo-ooh
*This verse was lifted and included in his later song ‘Earth Blues’. The people are praying but it’s not making
any difference
1ie In the background of the US city (‘Somewhere’), from the bar he is drinking in, he can see the aftermath
of the murder of MLK, (or possibly the earlier strife sparked by the police beating of John Smith in July
1967) – ie the glow in the night sky from part of the city that has been set alight during the protests and
“rioting” by these ‘frustrated souls’ in April 1968. See ‘House Burning Down’
2Meanwhile (on the TV in the bar) he sees the war across the sea in Vietnam. See 1983… etc.
3See the last verse in ‘House Burning Down’ where he talks about a spaceship (UFO) coming
down and taking all the dead bodies away. Then, after this ‘flight of fancy’ it’s back to the grim reality of the
sawdust on the bar‘s floor
4British word meaning ‘pleased’
5Jimi quotes this line verbatim in his strange “Talking over Eric Burdon” piece.
6Wry comment on the way he is being promoted.

Hope this is of use to you cartman:
They come from the book 'Cherokee mist', which is scans of most of his written work.
"Black gold" as represented on this site is actually two quite different pieces/versions? (both untitled as are most of Jimi's written pieces) joined together as if one piece without a break
"Crystal ball" (untitled) is from this book as well
"Ball and Chain" (untitled) is also from this book, Jimi sang some of these lyrics in a song he titled "Honey Bed", the "magic honey" verse being later used in his "Who Knows" He is described as having these notes in a big folder which he sometimes referred to when writing the final lyrics, usually after the music was down, he sometimes used verses from one abandoned song in another quite different song, as in this case and the verse from 'Somewhere' he used for Earth Blues.

uh yeah! much appreciated! ...figures! i actually have the cherokee mist book, just didnt occur to me to dig it out.
these lyrics i guess may be part of the '7 tapes in a headband' black gold suite that we're still all waiting on...
'suddenly november morning' is great; sooo love to hear the rest. ...you know that paul caruso NYC hotel session?
i did sometime back stumble on a 2 minute 'dirty jive talking' mpg from that session, not music, just everyone
goofin around & cussin'. i saved it somewhere along with the rest of the session. I used to have a 'traders
little helper' program to convert into/from flac files; but main reason my ratios so shit is down to couple
of harddrive wipes. i dunno dude, you probably got it already, but if someone wanted it i could maybe figure
out an upload, sometime... i saved loads of jimi youtube vids awhile back; stuff like the 'tax free' swedish
brothers/jimi jam, very jazzy! and a wicked 15 minute jimi /dave mason 'acoustic jam'. stuff like that now
pulled from youtube, but could maybe be converted to flac audio, & put up here? dunno! sorry for ramblin'...
but yeah, thanks! =)
