I think it's unneccessary and misleading to lump 'Pass It On' with 'Straight Ahead' as it is a previous song with almost entirely different lyrics, the music, of course was used fror Straight Ahead, but that doesn't make it the same song.
I think the same should apply to this song it was clearly not titled 'Somewhere' at this point, it has entirely different lyrics and even the music is not entirely the same. I suggest it should be titled "Cold Stormy Night" [or some such?] from the lyrics as many of JH's untitled lyrics etc. are given names - to avoid unnecessary confusion. What say you?

“COLD STORMY NIGHT” [untitled, music later developed into ‘Somwhere’]

A long time ago-o
One cold stormy night
I was layin’ down in my bed around [you?[noon?]
I hea-eard a whole lot of noise goin’ on outside
An’ then I jumped up, ran outside
And see what they are doin’

Such a sha-ame, such a sha-a-ame*
Had to represent the man
Standin’ outside an’ I breathed some air

They called my mama a witch
And they hung her up by the tree
That’s the last I seen of Mississippi

*JH wrote another song around this line, 'Shame, Shame', Shame' being used as a title. Played as medley with Room
Full Of Mirrors, a 1968 studio version and a 1969 live version exist . He later changed the line of the chorus to ‘It’s Too Bad’, and recorded a complete studio version with that title.

proto or embryonic version would be better in my opinion if the song later develops into another song, and this way avoids to pick a title one self. It also shows the way how Hendrix wrote his music and songs, which went through several transitional stages before finalized and titled. Giving the songs titles would give the sense of finished products but that is, I think, not how Hendrix worked or how he saw them.

just my opinion.

A song with entirely different lyrics is not "proto" anything, it's just an original song. There are many songs with completely different lyrics and the same/very similar tune, but they are not called by the same title which would be ridiculous! Songs may stay the same or be changed into something entirely different as in Jimi's 'Lover Man' from 'Rock Me Baby' (not one of his best;)) etc. etc. 'Rock Me Baby' is not going to be called 'Lover Man' because of this! There are several songs in JH's catolog that have similar features. They had different lyrics and and title at times and should be seen as such. Anything else is just confusingly 'dogmatic' - blinkers on.

Although it seems like it, it doesnt even have to be a song/lyrics written by Jimi. Its probably not another Bo Diddley tune though :)

It would have been much easier if we had a handwritten bunch of lyrics with a title on top, but i dont think that (still) exists.

Thanks for the transcription stplsd, i dont see obvious errors.

These two lines have been questioned:

Had to represent the man
Standin’ outside an’ I breathed some air

Does sound crap. Anyone got a better interp?
