An article in a Swedish newspaper writes that Jimi's guitar, which was the one he first lighted ever - in London march -67, according to BBC - is going away in some auction in London. It is expecting to pull some half milj pound to its owner and some people thinks it is a fake. If it was mine I would never sell such a treasure. Anybody know something about it?

Yes , I've been following this auction ever since it was announced a couple of months ago. It is the guitar from Jimi's gig at the Finsbury Park Astoria on 31st March 1967 and is the first guitar he ever set fire to. The auction was yesterday and it sold for 280000 !

You can watch a video of a BBC reporter playing the guitar here ....

There was a simultaneous Ebay auction and you can view the item here .....

On the opening night of the Walker Brothers tour in London, backstage before the show Chas Chandler was looking for a way to grab more publicity than the other acts on the bill. Jimi had joked "Maybe I should smash an elephant". Music journalist Keith Altham then said "it's a pity that you can't set your guitar on fire" and Chas's eyes lit up. He immediately sent a roadie out to get some lighter fluid. Jimi performed the stunt during his final song , Fire. This was the first of only two times in his career that Jimi set fire to a guitar , the second time being at the Monterey pop festival two months later.

Once the instrument had been set on fire on stage at the Astoria, Jimi Hendrix was rushed off the stage and taken to hospital for burns on his hands. While he was undergoing treatment, the burnt guitar was collected by roadies and taken to Hendrix's press officer Tony Garland's offices. Garland then collected the guitar, and stored it in his parent's garage in Hove, and it lay there untouched until Garland's nephew uncovered it in 2007. The instrument was auctioned at the Idea Generation Gallery on Thursday 4th September 2008 and sold for 280,000.

That's stunning-How I wish I had $$$ . . . .
So . . . If, as I understand it correctly, Jimi burned 2 Strats, here & Monterey,
What guitar has Frank Zappa been playing (RIP) (many pix available) that was rumored to have been burned at Miami Pop Fest? It was supposedly given to him by a Hendrix roadie, at which point he promptly had it rebuilt with a contact pickup installed in the neck. He lists several tunes he played it on (Zoot Allures LP - etc)
I never heard of Jimi burning one there except as far back as 1976 when the Zappa article appeared on Guitar player Mag (cover pic).
Any "fill-ins" to an old head with fading memory :D would be appreciated.
Thanx - Peace

That's interesting , maybe he did it three times. When the Miami guitar was auctioned in 2002 Dweezil Zappa claimed that it was burnt by Jimi at the Miami Pop Festival in May 1968. There is no mention of this in either Mitch Mitchell's or Noel Redding's books. Mitch says he and Jimi were both stoned during the gig on a hallucinogenic that "some guy" had given them. Noel says it was an excellent gig. They only did the first show as the second one was rained off. Anyway , Zappa also speculated that the Miami guitar was the one from the Astoria which was burnt for a second time , this is obviously not true since the Astoria guitar has been uncovered from where it has been for 40 years. Hendrix's roadie Tappy Wright recently said this about the guitar on an internet forum .....

The Miami guitar is discussed on a Frank Zappa forum here. The Zappa fans are unsure about it too.
