Hi Everyone:)

I'm new to Crosstown Torrents but have been on the Pass It On list and was on the old Voodoo Chile list for years. It's great to be a part of the forum here.

I'm after modern day photos of the exact location where Jimi perfomed his two classic July 30th shows on Maui. Does anyone know where the exact location of the show was ?. Depedning on who you believe it was either right on the edge of the Haleakala Crater, just next to Seabury Hall or near a street called Dairy Road according to the Eyewitness book.

I've looked at Google Maps, Google Earth, etc and all three locations are a fair distance from one another. From what I can see on Google Earth, the most likely location is near Seabury Hall where there are a few large areas of grass which look like they could be where the concert was.

If anyone has some more information on the exact location or some modern day photos of the exact location I'd be extremely greatful.

Thanks,

CC

I think you're on the right track. I've always wondered why a 'shrine' of some sort was never placed there. Maybe those flying saucers 'removed' any 'evidence'?

Here is what Wiki has :

Rainbow Bridge Concert

Rainbow Bridge was a free unpromoted Jimi Hendrix concert in a horse pasture, 3000 feet up the slope of Mt. Haleakala on the island of Maui in Hawaii. A modest audience of a few hundred island hippies, surfers, and students showed up because it was rumored that Hendrix might play a free concert for a movie that Chuck Wein was directing. It was also rumored that flying saucers were predicted to arrive and hover over the concert to meet Jimi. The saucers failed to show.

This show on Maui was the last recorded Hendrix concert in the U.S. Some people mistakenly claim that this was the last live show Hendrix did in the U.S.; Hendrix actually did one more show in Honolulu, August 1 1970, before his death on September 18, 1970 in London, England.

The field is across from a rodeo center/parking lot. About a mile up the hill from Seabury Hall. It's somebody's backyard now. If you drive into the Seabury Hall parking lot (heading out of Makawao to Olinda) and turn left, you'll see the open field where the concert took place.

My friend Bryan is writing a book about the show and trying to find the damn place at 5 a.m. He mistakenly went to the top of Haleakala. Bryan took several incredible unpublished photos.

The Oskie Rice Rodeo Arena, the big oval/oblong dusty piece of ground on the left, heading south, on Olinda rd? is described as being only a mile from Makawao town, it appears to be no more than a couple of hundred yards above Seabury, just across from the Hanamu rd junction? see satellite map link above. is the field/'someone's backyard' on the south side of Hanamu rd?

From Wikipedia:

The "Rainbow Bridge" concert was a free concert (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concert) by Jimi Hendrix that was held on July 30, 1970, in a horse pasture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pasture) above Seabury Hall, on the "Upcountry" slopes of Haleakala (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haleakala), the volcano that makes up 75% of the island of Maui (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maui), Hawaii, although it probably last erupted in the 1600s, it is officially considered as being active.

If you make a right on Hanamu Rd, at Olinda Rd, on your left you will see open pastures ("backyard") and a fence to keep the wild life in. I was told by locals, that concertgoers parked in that lot and walked across Olinda Rd to where the concert took place. A better place to view the field would be from the Seabury Hall parking lot, facing Hanamu Rd. That way you won't be blocking or get stuck in a ditch. Do stop at the burrito place (across from Casanova's) for a good inexpensive meal.

I asked Melinda if she wanted to make the trek back there this July, but it looks like it will have to wait until next year.

I'm not very good with directions, I'm a bit confused. Could you be a little clearer.

If you make a right on Hanamu Rd, at Olinda Rd, on your left you will see open pastures ("backyard") and a fence to keep the wild life in.

If I was to drive down Hanamu rd towards the Olinda rd junction and turn right onto Olinda rd?
If I then looked to my left I would see the Oskie Rice Arena rodeo ground and large fields/pasture?

concertgoers parked in that lot and walked across Olinda Rd to where the concert took place.

If you then walk across Olinda road there are several houses and backyards with 4 large fields and open pasture at the back of them, on the south side of Hanamu rd. I presume the houses were built after the concert? and that the pasture at the back of the houses is the concert site

A better place to view the field would be from the Seabury Hall parking lot, facing Hanamu Rd. That way you won't be blocking or get stuck in a ditch.

Again, is it on the south side, ie across hanamu rd from Seabury hall?

Take a look at the Google map.
Leave Makawao going up the hill on Olinda Rd.
Find Seabury Hall on your right.
Find the corner of Olinda Rd and Hanamu Rd.
Make a right turn - the only direction you can go.
On your left is the field where the concert took place, but much has changed since 1970.
If you park in the Seabury Hall parking lot, facing Hanamu Rd. you can also see the field.

Hope that helps.

Many thanks for that, got the picture. So it was just a couple of hundred yards above Seabury Hall, after all. Just about a mile from the centre of Makawao town. Is that Melinda Merryweather? you mentioned. What's she up to these days? Any good info/stories on what Jimi got up to there?

You can see the open field here. The property is more divided now as you head past Seabury Hall. The scene here in the video was shot at Seabury Hall. It looks entirely different now. A rather elite private school.

Yes, it was obviously quite windy. Maui is a windy place, in common with most small islands stuck in the middle of a giant ocean. It was also obviously quite warm as the audience is mostly half dressed and sunburned.

It's usually about 10 to 20 degrees cooler up in Makawao than at the beaches. Actually very comfortable.

Aint the internet great, one moment you're talking to someone in Vladivostok (teros23)
and then you can take a virtual walk on Maui at the Rainbow Bridge site.
Why was the concert held at this particular place, remember vagely it had something to do with this place having the best vibe at that time??????
Maybe someone can tell a bit more about why it was exactly held here.
Thanks in advance

I missed going over to Seabury hall due to it being a "family trip". ;) I thought we were close to the "field" before going up the mountain. We did make it to the top of Haleakala. It wasn't cold at all but windy considering you're at 10K feet. Impressive volcano and Island. Here's a shot around 8K feet looking back towards where Seabury hall and the field would be at the very bottom hidden by the clouds of course. Would loved to have been sitting there on 30 July 1970.

How about it was just because it was the most conveniently accesible large field to Seabury Hall that didn't have (too many) obvious signs of civilisation around within film shot?

Indeed STP,sounds quite plausible. We shouldn't mythologize everything about Jimi of course. Allthough I do remeber that the reason Jeffreys & those movie guys went to Hawai was a rather misty one.Had something to do with it being a portal in time, and the way the stars stood??????? (Just remember it were the......LSD years.)
Gonna have a go at another transcript later tonight.I'll send it to your mailbox as soon as it's ready

Ok...after viewing the footage/stills, reading the posts for directions, and using the Google Maps....I figure the most 'exact' spot the stage/bandstand was is here...it seems the only possible place(to me) where the images and the landscapes match up...and yes I did take in account of changes over the years...but some things have not changed...for instance the sun still comes up in the East and sets in the West...this I found crucial to determine which direction the stage/bandstand faced....once this was determined...then matching the crater, forested areas, and possible still standing buildings...I came to the conclusion that the stage was approx. where I put the cursor.
1566715668
In the map pic....the stage/bandstand is almost aligned with that line on the ground by the cursor(see the angle on the stage floor in the footage/stills)...now why the film crew would choose to shoot into the sun as to shooting with the sun behind them is another question.,but apparently they did...maybe 'cause they wanted the crater off to Jimi's right(only scene I actually see the crater in the background is during Voodoo Child from the stage level camera)
the height of the film crew platforms, the stage level film crew and the rolling hills of the landscape explain certain discrepancies that at first seem to contradict some angles.
---
This seems to be the only somewhat clear ground level view(lot of foliage down Hanamu Rd.)down a bit from the Seabury Hall exit on Hanamu Rd.
I believe the field used was just beyond the trees where I have the cursor..the bandstand being a little more to the right of that.....crater is in the distance.
15669

another view using image taken by someone I found in Google Image(or maybe here on CTT)...
15670

Of course nothing confirmed or verified but this would be my best guess as to the somewhat 'exact' location of where the stage/bandstand was.

Still here on the Island of Maui! We visited Seabury Hall yesterday and I shot pictures of the school and surrounding field area. I will post them when we return to the mainland. The whole area has changed of course in 41 years time but the horse pastures are still there, with houses where there was once open space. Trees around Seabury hall are gone and it actually looks much better now than in the old filmed footage. You have to understand the area in question is huge and unless you where there 41 years ago will not be exact. I used the fence posts in the fields from the movie as they walk up to the stage as a reference point since they are still there along with the Eucalyptus trees seen in the background of the filmed concert above the stack of Marshall amps. Shot the front lawn where they were seen meditating and Melinda Merryweather is riding the horse around. I can only imagine hearing Jimi wailing away in such a quiet and beautiful location with no residents around yet! Also do not forget Haleakala is 10,000 feet and the concert was up at least around the 2000 ft mark as it steep around the area.

Thank you for your update...
looking forward to the images you took...
Yes...the exact location would be just about impossible to determine(unless by someone that was there),
do you think my Google map image 'estimate' is correct?
or do you think was further up toward the 'crater'..
heck...do you think it was even in that particular open area or another location all together.
I only have the footage and google views to go by myself, so I'm kinda limited, and I tried to make my assessments by 'absolutes'....ex:the direction of sun, shadows, time, known distortion of using zoom lenses(background subjects(tree lines, etc) appear closer to foreground subjects), etc....
now if the 'show' was before noon...then my theory is totally wrong...I did assume that the 'show' stared in the afternoon, form information about that day.
I also see the crowd people approach from 2 major directions.
J.L.
PS:...lol...also knowing a little about the Jefferey's and Wien's choice of using 'off the street corner' production people and methods(film where the 'vibes' are coming from on the particular day, building the 'stage' and filming into the suns direction) helps a bit to be able to understand..."Why the f*ck did they do that?" questions...and makes understanding the "Rainbow Bridge' movie a little clearer.

It was around 80 degrees the day I shot the photos with no wind at all! J Lucas the field is on a slope and the crowd would have been facing uphill if setup to accommodate filming for the Sun. The amps are facing toward the mountain which makes sense. I looked at the Google map and you are in the right region. Per the previous post From Lost Archives(thank you Steven) the field is across from Seabury Hall and the Rodeo field is still there where they walked across. When you are physically standing at the entrance to Seabury Hall you only have to look across the road to visualize how it would have been setup. No other fields look the same and the Eucalyptus trees are the easy reference as they are still there and in a row. You can also see the Pacific Ocean from the driveway of Seabury Hall. I was offered the opportunity to go inside and take photos but did not due to limited time. It was so cool to look at the window that Jimi opens and points the rifle from during the assassination. The original windows and railing are still there! It will all make sense when I post the photos.

First section walking across from Olinda road leading up to the "field". I estimate it was behind the first set of trees on the right. No access to that area to confirm, it is private property. The locals really don't want people tresspassing on their land.

The group in the movie hikes down that trail in the photo to end up at Holua cabin. That's from over 9000ft down to 6400ft. The hike back up is the hard part. The air is a bit thin up there as you can feel it when you hike up to this rock viewing point with no guardrails to hold you back. Haleakala is over 7 miles across. It is a special feeling when standing there looking out at 9,740ft. I still have not done sunrise there yet!

It was Pele's sister who she was battling with over a man of course. Her sister was only supposed to watch him and they fell on love. There is of course more to this age old story.
