I remember when I was a much younger version of the Hard Core Hendrix devotee I am today, and I was hearing all these stories about various guitarists who were all that and it was said they would be playing just like Hendrix. One of the mentioned dudes was Randy Hanson, and I was living in a great anticipation to hear the bloke and see on what level he would be playing. And once I got around to hear him, I was HUGHLEY DISAPOINTED to say the least, because for one, he didnt have any of the Hendrix feel to his play plus he didnt have Hendrix's sound nor way of playing.

About the only dude I have come across that has pulled real Hendrix renditions on occations, is the Swede Claes Yngström and his band Sky High. He has his personal way of playing, but when he has gotten in the Hendrix mood he'd let it all hang out. Now he's gotten older and even fatter and has lost some of the energy in his music. But I will look around and see what can be worth to upload.

off in his rendition of ]Voodoo Child (Slight Return). (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_l6TnbFCAA&feature=related&fmt=18%5B/FONT)

Also, if you haven't seen him yet, there's a dude at YT with the nick
marlowe2219 (http://www.youtube.com/user/marlowe2219), and he plays some really nice playalong versions of a number of Hendrix's tunes, and others. Unfortunately, YT pulled his really nice IOW version of Machine Gun, but he will re-upload it soon under a different name so to confuse the copywrite gestapo at YT.

But here are some examples:

In From the Storm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0trWbzXWIw&fmt=18)

Burning Desire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CiIXX57ahSw&fmt=18)

Come On (Part One) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pCX0-yZaSk&fmt=18)

Red House (part two) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HVotUzUc9M&fmt=18)

And here's a Japanese dude with a big Hendrix heart I found yesterday, playing a nice IOW version of Red House (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zPKhFjekPs&fmt=18)

Heh, heh, heh ... well - there's Hendrix, and then there's everyone else.

What people need to understand is there is only one Hendrix and will only be disappointed (as widely confirmed) if they expect anything more from these 'others'. You will all enjoy the tributes much more if you just accept that these are done 'in the spirit' of Jimi and nothing more.

Best Hendrix player in the world.

Jimicolors, Enrique, is one of the nicest people I have ever talked to as well.

Red House (part two) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9HVotUzUc9M&fmt=18)

Rainy Day Dream Away (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mbi5aRFZpPU&fmt=18)

And here's a Japanese dude with a big Hendrix heart I found yesterday, playing a nice IOW version of Red House (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zPKhFjekPs&fmt=18)

Wow, that japanese have listen and practised alot to IOW !!! :)

Ray Rae Goldman is one of my favorite Hendrix emulators! But I've often fantasized about the ultimate Hendrix emulator playoff. In the old days that would have been Robin Trower vs Frankie Marino vs Randy Hansen. And I think Trower would have kicked their asses. But today - Who Knows!

I don't like cover bands too much, but Wild T. & The Spirit used to do a LOT of Hendrix covers: http://www.wildt.ca/

I actually saw, I guess his name is Tony, appear as a special guest at a pub music night about a month ago for a couple of songs (not Hendrix).

Randy Hansen doesn't have ANY of the feel or sound? You got to be kidding, right? Randy's ability to capture it all is S-C-A-R-Y...!!!!!

I agree. I've got the 1984 bootleg of Randy with Buddy & Billy from the Kabuki Theatre in San Francisco. It really is scary how good Randy's playing is and how much he sounds like Jimi.

While I still think he's a travesty, I have to revise my earlier all too harsh statement and acknowledge his skills, after having been listening more to him. This is just one exammple:

most hendrix emulators are white rock musicians and that is why they cannot 'nail' the feel. their fascination with hendrix is more phallic then sonic. also backing bands usually dont have a clue what theyre doing. note for note copies are boring and every note that doesnt fit sticks out like a sore thumb. ofcourse jimi is jimi but most of these guys havent got a clue. most jimi tributes ive been to was nothing less then crowd raping. living out their boyish fantasies. but wth people clap and cheer nontheless. another thing SRV messed things up guitarplayerwise, everybody is covering jimi SRV versions. like kenny wayne sheppererd and an army of 300,000 other lame mofos.

you can categorize all these jimi emulating idiots:

the showcase gimmick idiots
the powerchord gesticulators
the SRV clowns
the im lefthanded and MUST play hendrix primates
the mirror strat sickos
the arpeggio 'look im cool' f#ckers
the sex-act guitar homping pantysniffers
the Halloween 'look its the 60s' arseclowns
the i can play hendrix but i dont have rhythm kiddos
the constant wah wah addicts
the i have the same gear as jimi and now i have no clue dudes
the i make feedback and everybody digs it crowd
the fake hippie with wig and a rubber dick.....
and speaking of dicks: last but not least we have yngwie malmsteen.

Emulating hendrix is futile man, take influence sure but take many influences as the man himself did & find your own style. There's musicians & then there's emulators i know what i'd rather be.

I thought that was kind of a rant, but why bring race into it? I seem to remember seeing the press all over Jimi (negatively) because he was black...

youre right. sounds like I blame being white as the cause for not 'nailing' it.
what i really meant was (and this is a fact I will bet my nosehairs on) that most emulators are Caucasian male with a (hard) rock musical background. and not blues/R&B specialists in the vain of Curtis mayfield, buddy guy, t bone walker, albert king, steve cropper, don covay you name all the musos jimi listened to blah blah etc.
jimis music is soaked with blues and r^b feel if you havent eaten any cheese from this music (lol dutch expression) its hard to go on stage with a rock trio and nail that jimi feeling. its just square 1,2,3,4 dull shit.
listen to jimi's PH at Marguee bbc recordings. what a feel and clean guitar tone. emulators have tons of distortion and....aah well wankers.
my impression trhough interviews is jimi disliked the emerging hard-rock trend he felt he was partly responsible for. pathetic guys that dont get it with rows of marshalls and shrill tones. which interview did he say something like this? anyway.. luckily jimi didnt make it to the 80s. then again he missed out on Miles and Funkadelic:(

I think there's a big difference between trying to BE Jimi, and taking lessons and inspiration from him though. The first is flawed from the start. I grew up watching and listening to Jimi, thats how i learnt to play, i'm sure many people did... But at some point you've gotta make it your own. But whatever you do, i really dont see how the amount of melanin in you makes a difference. You as likely to be shit if your black, white, or purple.

SRV was a great guitarist, he didn't try to replicate JH's sounds, he merely played them in his own style, which you don't find pleasant I guess. That doesn't mean everyone playing a JH cover is copying him with the intent of sounding just like it, note for note, it's usually just paying homage to someone who "led the way" musically.

Check out a youtube channel called Handtricks, I have him on facebook, his name is Angel Reca. He plays left handed on upside down strats and was won the best tribute act on Jimi's birthday at The Hard Rock Cafe's Hendrix Birthday Party, Janie and Tina were there if I remember rightly.

I don't get why some slag him, but SRV is the only one I can stand to hear do Jimi, and it was forced on me while seeing him the first time ('75 Aloha Stm.). It took 1 1/2 JH tunes before I threw in the towel and just grooved on his masterful in-depth interpretations, he was nailing it and in his own way, I was hooked. And it didn't hurt having Dbl. Trouble backing him.

Even though he uses authentic vintage Hendrix gear and effects he's still got his own sound and own licks so not just emulating. I.e a great interpreter of HENDRIX
