A Sign of the 3rd World War-Denver Stereo Merge

A Sign of the 3rd World War
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Mile High Stadium June 29, 1969
    The Denver Pop Festival
Whiteflame Stereo Merge of The Final JHE Concert
    Merge engineered by Steev Wachman

Just in time for the Holidays
This is the Stereo Merge I’ve been working on in between hospital visits and Studio Malfunctions. It is derived from ATM 118 and ATM 207, which turns out, is only a badly Eq’d version of ATM 118. Originally thought to be a different source than 118, 207 contained many digital bangs as well as cuts in different places as 118, further complicating the Synchronization process. This was a total Labour of Love [and joy] for me, as I believe this to be one of the very best examples of Jimi Hendrix’s “searching” spirit, which was shared that night with a lucky few, and we are fortunate to have the limited recording we do of the Experience’s very last gig.
After sadly discovering that 207 was from the same source as 118, and the sync being so out, from speed variances & cuts, I was going to drop the project. But instead, I courageously forged ahead for my own pleasure. After a week or so, I began to really enjoy the results, least of all realizing I could control the “pseudo” panning of the Stereo program back & forth as though I was in the Studio, working with a Studio Recording. This is something I obviously would tend to leave alone in a “Live” recording, but after re-discovering certain properties of time compression, and the futility of the project itself, I began to enjoy the rewards of the task. Plus the fact I am a Recording Engineer & a Musician who enjoys a good challenge every now & then.

As I got into my flow and became more familiar with what I was undertaking, I decided in that 1st week, to act as Engineer and Producer, [with Jimi stepped out for a smoke] so I would not feel constrained as I had to make on the spot decisions regarding what was fast becoming pleasurable to me. I actively engineered Stereo spreads to the best of my abilities with this severely “limited” Master, including Left/Right Right/Left speaker crossings during Leads and Solos, almost as though this was a Studio Recording. An impossible feat, to be sure, but I was relentless in finishing this. The Stereo feature is more apparent in Headphones, but lots don't take their music that way. You should still try it once, after a nice “LOUD” listen on speakers. And if you never heard ELL [or the other first 2 LP’s] that way, shame on you.

None of this is perfect - Lots turned out very nice. So I am inviting the collecting populace to join me in experiencing this final Jimi Hendrix Experience concert, in pseudo Stereo. How I wish ATM207 would have been from a different source, but it was not to be. Your comments and/or suggestions are more than welcome, good or bad.

B4 I reveal the 3 Folder contents, there is one last item, and the reason for Folder’s 4 & 5.
There was a dropout in my original DL’d Flac copy of ATM 118’s Tax Free about 30 seconds into the song, lasting for about 20-25 seconds which rendered the Stereo Imaging Left-Heavy during that time.
Folders 1 & 2 & 3 included those “unrepaired” versions of Tax Free.
In Folders 4 & 5 the dropout was repaired to the best of my ability, rendering Folders 2 & 3 “useless” and therefore “Not Included” or needed here.

    So - Here’s what’s in the 3 Folders [1 & 4 & 5]

Folder 1 [Included] - The Original “1st Run” Merge:
    Explained above:
ATM 207 is unaltered on the Left side except for major time edits and digital ‘bang’ removal.
ATM 118 is unaltered on the Right side except for minor time edits and minimal digital noise removal.
Only digi-bangs were repaired and time edits repaired so 207 matched 118. I also repaired/pasted a few cuts into 207 from 118 but none of these repairs affects any music. Only “in-between’s”. You’ll hear a few seconds of mono audience here and there.
This 1st run is included only to make the finished project a “Complete” one.
I for one, think the sound is horrible and is only included perhaps to have completed copies of 118 & 207 with most digi-noise removed.
    ===================
Folders 2 & 3. [Not included] - Due to the dropouts in Tax Free-as explained above.

    2. This is the 1st Analog EQ’d Program from the CD Backup of Folder 1, back to Digital/Mac thru my Pro Tools Original 442 Interface with the Apogee Filters. Not included anymore in Pro Tools, but now sold separately for twice the $$.

    3. This is the EQ’d files from Folder 2 digitally treated with "Waves L1 Limiter" Plug-In, set to a ceiling of -.3 which effectively prohibits any digital clipping. I soft limited it so the strongest limiting kicks in at only 2.2 % of the signal, which is near nothing. It basically gives you exactly what went in, just a bit more of it.
Again, Not included-Due to the dropouts in Tax Free
    =====================
    Folders 4 & 5
These folders [included] are exactly the same as 2 & 3 respectively, with the dropout in the right channel of the beginning of Tax Free repaired as best as I could do it without causing a “snap”.
    =========================================
The show was EQ'd to be clean and enhance some of the dynamics, and for you to turn the bass up, as in most music.
Mitch & Noel are actually brought forward a bit as the show goes on. And what a great Drum Solo in Spanish Castle Magic.
Actually the complete absence of Mitch at the beginning may have just been the soundman getting his shit together.
But the GUITAR ! ! If I could lay what I did on a better rhythm track. OMG!
I can now hear where Jimi hits the 3 way switch & every pop of the Wah Wah kicking in . . . Very defined.
Again, too bad there was not a better master. And I’ll bet the taper is sorry he recorded the “Tune Up” at the beginning of the show, having sacrificed the end of the show due to battery failure . . .

    One last comment . . . .
This is just something I owe to Jimi Hendrix. I obviously can never call him up or be his friend. OR engineer his records . . . .
I can only adore him thru his Music as 10 million others do. . . Or can I?
He changed how I spend my days now, and largely taught me [as a fragile teen] not to be afraid that I think differently; something my own family failed miserably at . . .
So, as I've been channeling him this way for 40 + years, it seems only natural to want to offer something back.
This was just for me. If it turned out better and is worth putting out there, I'm pretty happy about it.
If you all think not, I’ll go make a Peanut Butter Sandwich.
Artwork has hit a small snag and I welcome anybody to come forward & give it a shot.
I had an idea exactly what I wanted including graphics, pics & art, but did not have the software to pull it off.
    What else is new?
A thousand thanks to Pat for the FLAC.
Had it not been for each and every one of you here at CTT, I would basically have my LA Forum 4/25/70 2 LP set,
Pipe Dreams & a Maui Rehearsal vinyl bootleg [with the Talk-Over] to play over & over till the End of Time.
You all changed that for me.
Please do not post this elsewhere while it’s still active here.

Have a FANTASTIC Holiday Season and, as always,
A Prayer for Peace and Illumination - For a whole Generation of sleeping people.
And a sincere wish for an ILLUMINATING 2009 and Beyond ! ! !
Make a difference in your own life next year, and you’ll make a difference in someone else’s life too.
    Peace - Steev

Re: A Sign of the 3rd World War-Denver Stereo Merge

Thank you so much Steev!!! Definately one of the best performances to enhance as, I lfor one, always wished this recording was a bit better.
Also having taped shows for many years and frequently feeling an inner desire to do more with my "talent" I harbored the dream of becoming a recording engineer of sorts and, applaud you for chasing that dream and making it real!!!
PS. my first JH boot was also Pipe Dream, believe purchased in 80/81. On the side...I have a 1st or 2nd gen of a R Hanson show from Tucson, done on a D5 that sounds fantastic too!!! If any one wishes me to send my tape to torrent just give me an address!!!
    Cheers!!!

Re: A Sign of the 3rd World War-Denver Stereo Merge

I will certainly give this a listen. But I'm wondering, if ATM 207 is a "badly eq'd version of ATM 118" with digital bangs, pops and cuts, why wouldn't you just make your own nicely eq'd version of 118 without the dropouts abd bangs and use that to create your pseudo-stereo? Why put all the effort into remastering 207?

Steev, am listening to it now. Sounds pretty great to me! Obviously not for the "average" listener of Hendrix, but it sure is for the hardcore listener!!

    Thank you.

Re: A Sign of the 3rd World War-Denver Stereo Merge

Merry Xmas all. I am out of town & have about 2 mins . .
    I soo 4got the songlist.
ABBEYDABBEY. The Artwork is absolutely fabulous!!!! Thank you so much. I'm just hoping you guys enjoy the show.
Tax Free was a total bitch to do, but I think it came out ok, and Fire was a bit "Flangy" but was pretty definitive, so I decided not to redo it.
Roland, my friend. What a question. . . . I just don't do things "easy".
After discovering they were both the same source, I continued on for my own enjoyment as I absolutely LOVE this show and liked what I was hearing those 1st nights at 3 am. Jimi knew this was the end & felt the [short-lived] weight off his shoulders that night.
It is also said he dropped a hit of Acid with his friend Herbert Worthington [sp] that night & was in a particularly good mood.
To me it shows in his playing.
Not to mention the 3000 Gatecrashers and police retaliation with tear gas canisters . . . . . .
The question I might ask you and the others is, "Did you enjoy it?" That's the reason I finished it. And if so, which version was better - 4 or 5?

ABBEYDABBEY. Thank you again 4 the Art. I LOVE IT. C U all Friday, or so.
PS: WHITEFLAME STUDIOS was the name of my old Studio & now my Production Company, pretty much idle these days . . .
so the Art graphics are particularly accurate .

Seemed nice to have something new for Xmas here at the .org
Just in time for a 40th Anniversary. [Hard to believe].
In a couple days I'll listen back to it myself, having not heard it in a couple days. I've been too close to this for 4 months already to know what I think of it. That's why I was interested did anybody think it was worth it?
Have a BEAUTIFUL HOLIDAY and don't forget to add a couple seconds to those hugs
    Much Peace
    me
