thank you for posting.... my father was a drummer with jimi from this time. I believe he is on "sundance" and everyone who ever played with him claims it is Randy kaye on drums.

RIP, and quite an impressive career your dad had. That is very likely indeed; it's certainly not Mitch Mitchell, who turned up shortly before the Woodstock festival and did not rehearse much.

Yes my father stayed in woodstock for a month before the festival playing at the Shokan house and a few gigs in town with Jimi. I interviewed Juma Sultan in an upcoming documentary called "Tao Beats" about Randy Kaye and Juma recalled Randy well.

Please take a moment to check out my project! It's a documentary about Drummer Randy Kaye. Randy played in The Gypsy Sun Rainbows Band before the Woodstock festival. Randy was fired by Mr. Hendrix's managers along with an entire horn section before the festival because they didn't really like or understand the music and where Jimi wanted to take it from what I can understand. Mr. Hendrix was more interested in playing with the great jazz musicians of the day. Mr. Kaye had had a reputation on the NYC scene at the time having played with such notables as Roland Kirk,Sam Rivers,Kenny Dorham,Enrico Rava,Tony Scott,Perry Robinson, and the list goes on. The fact of Mr. Kaye's involvement with the Gypsy Sun Rainbow band has been confirmed by Mr. Juma Sultan in an interview. It is actually my belief that it is indeed Randy Kaye on the track "Sundance" as this was the period Randy was with Hendrix and quite frankly Mitch Mitchell would never think to play anything that mellow or restrained. The musicians who knew Randy and played with him swear it is him as well. In the scheme of things and considering Mr. Hendrix's relatively short career I believe Randy Kaye deserves his due along all the other musicians that Jimi "jammed" with.
