A tidbit from a much much longer 1976 NY Times profile, the remainder of which I apparently didn't deem worth the keeping---

Ebony May 1968
Interesting seasonal stuff reminded me of that 1967 Disc & Music Echo (UK) Christmas cover.
Interesting positioning for BOGs in the Ebony/Jet magazines record club?

Yeah, many thanks Ayler. These, it appears, are reviews of the Villerupt concert, held in the function hall (salles des fetes) of the Town Hall (Hotel des Ville). Are the complete articles on any site, alternatively, do you have any info on the title, author, names of the newspapers, page number etc? please?
I will attempt a translation using google, the 1st clip:
Of the two parts of this show, it was the first that was more "calm". Long Chris opened the show followed by a black. Tommy Hemdrix [sic], who, after having some trouble with his guitar strap, showed a fine style by juggling, and playing his instrument with his teeth .... Alternately [these two band leaders?] of Johnny Hallyday, and finally his band [the Blackburds], gave an overview of their virtuosity, preparing the house for the second part [ie Johnny].
2nd:
Long Chris, who sees himself as a redeemer, was 'whistled' (booed) during his folk-songs. It was too soft. In contrast, the whole audience became ecstatic when a certain Jimmy, an American resembling a Papuan [New Guinea (French equiv. of 'WMO Borneo'?)], discovered in a suburb of London by Johnny, gave a remarkable exhibition on guitar .. Not satisfied playing the instrument behind his back, the "virtuoso" also gave an interpretation with his teeth. Without doubt he was too hungry the day before, in Nancy, since a string broke at the beginning of this display. But it was only postponed ...
"I have a head like that! [ie my head hurts! or ;-) I give head like that!]" Confided 'a/the machinist' [stage crew?/Jimi?]. Attracted by the uproar, a
crowd had gathered in front of the town hall. The concert could be heard from the balconies of H.L.M. [Puplejim informs that this means housing scheme/project] neighbours.

Both are reviews of the Villerupt gig. The first clipping is from the "Républicain Lorrain' (17.10.66 Longwy edition). The second is from "l'Est Républicain (17.10.66 Longwy edition).
I had a go myself on the Johnny Hallyday/Jimi Hendrix tour page!

It's great that Bernard helped get this info to us. I simply put up a message on a Hallyday forum and a few weeks later in it all comes. These reports were sleeping in newspaper archives for 43 years and now we can read them. Fantastic.
He will be going back to the archives in order to capture another brief mention of the Nancy gig.
Of course many thanks to Bernard Eyl too! looking forward to read anything else he has found

By most news accounts, Newport Pop '69 was a disaster for the community, here's one (of several) summary that pretty well touches on all points (while maybe fleshing out a few memories for some in the bargain):
