Seen this ad somewhere before? Anyone know anything about it? 21-7-1969?Don't know why Robbie 's lumped 3 ads from 68, 69 & 70 together?
    All from Crawdaddy, maybe?

The date is during Jimi's Boiceville phase, one week prior to his trip to Morocco. Was the benefit cancelled, or what?

    Re: Newspaper & Magazine Article Scans: 1960's - 1970's

Tim Hardin, John Hammond gig that Ellen McIlwaine claims Jimi backed both her and Hammond at the Au Go Go.
Note: She is not listed as performing and Hammond only claimed the dates with the Blue 'Flame' advertised. I have not seen any ads for her playing anywhere in the Village that month. In fact the 1st mention I can find for McIlwaine being in the Village is an ad. ["Ellen Macklewayne"] on 12 January 1967, one of four support acts (2nd from bottom) for a David Blue and Richie Havens show. I'm pretty confident that her "memory" is somewhat muddled.
Steig only formed his group in 1967 which ties in with ads (from 26-01-67 onward) for the Scene club gigs in the Voice for a February residency: "Tim Hardin with a Electric Band"
Jeramy [sic] Steig and the Satyrs are not listed either for any dates with Hammond, or anyone else in 1966, because they did not exist yet. Steig says he formed the band specifically to back Tim Hardin. Just prior to the opening of the 1967 Hardin shows the ad changed from 'With an Electric Band' to 'Jeremy Steig'. This group, with the addition of a singer, soon became the Satyrs. They were initially just called 'the Jeremy Steig Quintet', in the 1st ad for them that I can find (for the club 'L'intrigue') - in the Voice not long after the Hardin gigs (9 March '67). The 1st use of the name 'Jeremy and the Satyrs' is in an ad (26 March '67) for the Baloon Farm (NYC. aka 'The Dom') gig. Steig never mentions playing with Hendrix.

The ads in NY Times & VV have Judy Roderick replacing Hardin at the Go Go as headliner for the 1966 shows from the 13th (with times Sq 2, Hammond and Blue Flame), followed by Junior Wells & the Buddy Guy Trio from 19th, no mention of support acts. Someone apparently forgot to change the ads in New York Post and possibly another paper which still had Hardin Hammond & Blue Flame playing up to and including 23rd! The Blues Project took the headline spot on 23rd, relegating Junior Wells Blues Band to support slot.

    Re: Newspaper & Magazine Article Scans: 1960's - 1970's

10-08-69: Last day of the run of 'Monterey Pop' at Kips Bay cinema, New York City (same day issue as the 'Woodstock' ad in the NY Times with a map of how to get there etc.. Also the same day the news broke of the horrific murder of Sharon Tate and her and Polanski's friends).
It was shown at Kips Bay exclusively in US and the World (& NY & NJ city until 13-08-69) from 29-01-69 (its public premiere), until 25th April when it opened in Fresno on the West Coast, and then at selected venues for a limited showing at each, as if a 'live' show 'on tour', after which it went around most states in a similar manner. Three days after this final showing at Kips Bay it was finally opened to general release in cinemas all over New York City and New Jersey City, about 28 in all - but for one week only! See following ads (12-08-69 & 13-08-69)... this I think was likely a significant factor in the enormity of the crowd that ended up at 'Woodstock', ie they were expecting another Monterey type scenario, thousands having seen the film fairly recently, possibly even the previous night and thought, 'I'll just have a look'!...

All copies of Jet, Ebony, most of Billboard and most of Village Voices 1965, 1967, 69 & 70 (crucially missing V.V.s are the entire years 1966 & 68) are readily available on google books anyway. And Crawdaddy, KRLA Beat, International Times are all available on line too.

Jimi was the artist featured in the last two picture ads for Kips Bay's final showings of Monterey:

    Re: Newspaper & Magazine Article Scans: 1960's - 1970's

The oft quoted "review" by Pete Johnson, "Jimi graduated from rumor to legend" at Monterey, must have been written months, if not years after the event and appears to be merely a retrospective observation. The only Monterey article in la times I could find prior to 26-Aug.-67 was his 'Hippies at their Happiest at Monterey' article (2 days after the event), where JH only gets a name check as one of the acts that evening and Johnson only comments (extremely briefly) on the Dead and Who. Anyone know when that "review" was actually published? My guess is it was many years after the event rather than just a few?
