    1970-04-25 4th Source (ATM 241 + Bonus Disc)

This torrent includes 2 versions of a previously uncirculated 4th source from Los Angeles Forum, Los Angeles, CA 25.04.1970. The source is incomplete, but this is the complete tape.

A big thank you must go to the taper for making this tape available, and thanks also to those who have been involved in the transfer- and restoration process.

    Taper: Marcos (XiKano/MourningStar)
    Lineage: Master Cassette > CDR

    ATM 241:

LOS ANGELES FORUM, LOS ANGELES, CA 25.04.1970 - 4th SOURCE
    (Unaltered version)

    Digitally restored:

Phase offset corrected, variable pitch correction performed, some varying volume adjustments to the left channel performed, and finally a handful of clicks (due to tape damage) and some momentary single-channel dropouts (also from tape aging/damage) fixed. No editing has been done to the tape, so any problems have been left as they were. Most notable are 2 cuts in "Machine Gun" (14), where respectively 2:00 and 1:03 of music is missing.

    01 Intro - 10:17
    02 Spanish Castle Magic (41) - 4:21
    03 Foxy Lady (76) - 4:23
    04 Lover Man (25) - 5:15
    05 Hear My Train A-Comin' (38) - 10:03
    06 Message To Love (26) - 5:14
    07 Ezy Ryder (16) - 4:29
    08 Machine Gun (14) - 7:13

    Total time: 51:16

    BONUS DISC:

LOS ANGELES FORUM, LOS ANGELES, CA 25.04.1970 - 4th SOURCE
    (Modified version)

    Digitally restored:

Phase offset corrected, variable pitch correction performed, some varying volume adjustments to the left channel performed, and finally a handful of clicks (due to tape damage) and some momentary single-channel dropouts (also from tape aging/damage) fixed.

    Modifications:

There were a handful of bad places on the original tape. These problems have been sorted out here, and the problem areas have been patched with excerpts from the 2nd Source (aka. Far source).

There's one patch each in Foxy Lady, Lover Man (actually after the song during the applause), and Hear My Train.

Machine Gun had 3 problem areas, of which one has been patched. The other 2 were cuts where respectively 2:00 and 1:03 of music was missing. The track is included here in 2 versions. One has these cuts smoothed out, but not patched, while the other (composite version) has the cuts patched, and thereby restored to its original length.

    01 Intro - 10:17
    02 Spanish Castle Magic (41) - 4:21
    03 Foxy Lady (76) - 4:23
    04 Lover Man (25) - 5:11
    05 Hear My Train A-Comin' (38) - 10:03
    06 Message To Love (26) - 5:14
    07 Ezy Ryder (16) - 4:29
    08 Machine Gun (14) - 7:13

    Alternate track:
    09 Machine Gun (14) (Composite) - 10:11

    Total time: 61:26

On the modified version, the order of the 2 Machine Guns (tracks 8 and 9) can of course be changed when burning this to an audio disc, depending on what version you prefer to be the "main" version.

    Not included on this source:
-- Room Full Of Mirrors >
    -- Hey Baby >
    -- Instrumental Solo >
    -- Freedom
    -- The Star Spangle Banner
    -- Purple Haze
    -- Voodoo Child(slight return) > Midnight Lightning

Artwork is included in the torrent.

When I first talked to Marcos, he said that (he thought for years) the tape isn't good enough for anyone else to hear it!!
Oh, my God, how wrong he was!. I also like the 10 minutes intro which gives us additional info about the venue and overall atmosphere at the Forum.
Thanks for making it available for us!
This is an excellent recording. I don't think I've heard many better audience tapes from the same period. It would be interesting to hear what kind of equipment Marcos used to record the concert.
Thanks one more time to H-P, Doug and of course Marcos
(maybe now you might try to locate the 2nd tape, who knows maybe those
pitch problems aren't so severe as you prviously thought?).

    A review from ESC :

I'm basing this on the Munia LP version that I bought from Sam's Records on 149th Street in the Bronx back in '71, the Rubber Dubber LP version, and the currently-circulating "stereo" version.

This is a vast improvement over all of them! True, you still can barely hear Mitch on drums, but the guitar parts are quite a bit more defined and upfront, as are Jimi's vocals, as compared to previous issues of this show. I used to argue with Ken Voss over which was the better show. He said it was Fehmarn and I said it was LA '70. I win!!!! And you produced the evidence!!!!

Haven't heard "Machine Gun" yet. My point of reference on this disc is "Spanish Castle Magic". My point of reference on "Machine Gun" is Band Of Gypsys. Other versions don't really matter to me.

You could have nudged the guy in front of you and asked him politely to shut the f*** up, though, but that's all water under the bridge now, I guess.

Anyway, wonderful up. Thank you, sir!

This is the most amazing show. This was the first Jimi non vinyl boot I ever got. Bought it when in Orlando many years ago. Then I got into the net and downloading shows and got the different sources and merges. Jimi's playing had really matured and the 70s shows are my favourites yet I still keep playing this one show regularly and then............ Wow! This is just awesome. Just want to thank all concerned from the bottom of my heart for this piece of musical history. You've made an old man very happy

    Re: 1970-04-25 4th Source (ATM 241 + Bonus Disc)

Well, I have 3 versions of this already (My VERY favorite JH concert) but since side 3, the Room Full Of Mirrors side was not included here, I hesitantly passed this one up (sacrelige!!!) The comments from the Admin's & others is now killing me & I've got to know! Thanx for ever continuously looking for better versions of this. I 1st ever heard this Boot in 1972 while snowed in (Literally-snow up to the roof) during a blizzard in a visit to Ann Arbor Mich. We were locked in the house for 3 days with no way out & this double LP and a Deep Purple LP were propped up in the corner of the room. I soon began policing the turntable (I was just a friend of a friend . . .) not letting anybody remove the Room Full of Mirrors side (3). I immediately found a copy when I rt'd to Philly & still have it today. Though I now have 3 copies . . . .
Sorry for the flashback . . . . Now I'm dying to hear this copy.
THANK YOU GUYS AGAIN for the perseverance! It is NOT going un-noticed, or appreciated.
    Peace - Steve
