Thanks a lot Johan/Hawk/ & Carly for providing.Great to have something new (the "soundchecks/studio???) should be great.and to you johan or any other moderator a question, why was the lay out different for a while, assume it has something to do the major changes Hawk was talking about.

    All the best

peace is hard work, you have to keep after it by fighting hate and listening to Jimi Hendrix records.

What a strange source indeed. Perhaps the recorder was located backstage?

Thanks so much! What an interesting sound, Jimi's guitar is so clear. It almost does sound like a board, but the in-between-stopping of the recorded between songs would suggest someone in the audience? Maybe someone onstage instructed by Jimi to make a recording??? Either way, a great listen!!!

Listened to this more....what a fascinating recording! Maybe it is a board, the end of the show certainly sounds as if it could be. Interesting how Jimi's vocals become loud during "Train." Suggests some sort of feed? Unless a stage monitor was flipped on. Mitch's drums can be heard decently well too from that point on. Do we know the story of how this tape was found? Thx again!!!!!!

Nice theories. Okay, then this is how it went: During the first part of the show until Hear My Train, the concert was recorded with a microphone placed on stage. Then one person had the idea to insert a cable or two from the soundboard into the taperecorder.

So the first half is more or less an audience recording, with some ingredients from the soundboard added during the second half.

And then the recording was copied and copied numerous times, 10th generation or something.

I doubt that this is a soundboard recording. A sbd, no matter how bad it would be recorded, would have sounded different.

It seems that the first part of the recording (up to the 2nd half of "Hear My Train") was recorded pretty much on stage or from the stage side and sort of >behind< the vocal PA. That would explain the barely audible vocals and lack of close audience noises.

But then there's a noticable change in frequency shortly before Jimi sings the last verse: a lot more mid-range frequency and less muddy low-end then on the first part - as if the taper managed to move a little closer to and in front of the vocal PA and guitar stacks.

Also, I think the "Room Full Of Mirrors" rehearsal bit is from 1970 - it definitely sounds like Mitch is playing drums, not Buddy.

    My 2 cents.

Its hard though to get more than just a more "open" sound out if it since the 1st source is so ambient..
