maybe...but the 'Stone Free' bonus that was on 'A Film About Jimi Hendrix' DVD came out in 2005...so that's 10 years at least that some of the footage was 'cleaned up'....
Here's a comparison with the Atlanta reel footage(both seem to have inserted other shots starting at 4mts till the end)..
NOTE: as with the Purple Haze video I did add a little sharpness and decreased the brightness and added a touch of contrast to the Atlanta reel footage(right side) to at least get it to the point where both 'black areas' are the same...otherwise the Atlanta reel is way too light.

'Stone Free' video comparison(audio is from the DVD bonus footage)

    The "bored" stuff, yet?
Oh, yeah, Jimi was so "bored"... to the point to mimic wiping his eyes after the line "purple haze all in my eyes" at 1:58... C'MON, people!

Looking at the comparison video, in the new version they have missed a lovely bend moment at 2'54" with a fuller shot of Jimi. Shame.

My personal opinion after this brief glimpse in low res is that the new footage has been color corrected to reflect the color white so it appears as white. The older shading may in fact be more accurate, as the incandescent spots were likely to shift things yellow on film, BUT to the human eye white probably looked white if you were close to the stage (at the same range as the cameras). So color correction is often "to taste."
I did consider this as well - I guess it is too early to really judge without seeing it in full...but the lack of yellow as noted by Karsten was quite apparent.
Also to merge two posts into one - JL - I forgot they had the Stone Free bonus on 2005 release...I might go and have a look at that shortly to compare. Maybe they did digitise it all years ago (well early 2000s at least) - so that would make it only ten years or so from Douglas version. So it may just be the colour mix after all?

Finally thanks again JL for going to the trouble of making the side-by-side comparisons! Much appreciated!

Douglas used the Atlanta footage in the video release "Johnny B. Goode" from 1985. So the transfer is quite old.

They could have just re-titled it "Wild Blue Angel"

Found the full Alan Douglas version. By the looks of the sneak peeks, the new version will be GREATLY improved.

meaning that the blueish teint is a concious choice (or the direct result of computer digitalization) rather than the result of a deterioration of the film over the years?

Correct, meaning it could be a conscious choice on EH's part. It also means that it's possible that the original Douglas version may not have been "correct" either, but a conscious choice by the producers at that time to make it appear more yellowish/brown.

Nice catch and I am glad they included the audience intro instead of a cut or a fadein when the SBD starts.
