Examples of Jimi saying "Thank You!" with his guitar

Some mindless summer fun - identify recordings where Jimi mimicks the phrase "Thank You!" on his guitar.

To start off, one early and one late example...

    1. End of solo on "Welcome Home" with CK/Squires 65-10 (around 2:02)

    2. Very end of "Midnight Lightnin'" from Isle of Wight 70-08-30

He 'spoke' quite a lot (ie not just 'thank you', and (often) 'mother fucker') through his guitar, it was part of his act from his early days in Tennessee ie his 'Magic Guitar' billing in those early days

At Ventura '70 I saw him use his guitar to unleash an awesome stream of invective punctuated with divebomb explosions against a hapless Salzer Productions stagehand. It was like the wrath of Zeus raining down on the poor guy.

There's not even a setlist. But I definitely remember "Spanish Castle Magic", "Red House", "Machine Gun" and "Voodoo Child (SR)" in the truncated set. I'm pretty sure he also played "Fire", "Purple Haze" and "Foxy Lady". After those I'm just guessing.

Apparently Hendrix was already interested in mimicking sounds he heard around him with his guitar as a kid. You can hear that kind of imaginative approach also in many of his studio recordings. I think for him it was a bit more than just "part of his act".

Good observation. For example ''Lower Alcatraz/Keep On Groovin'' where Eddie says ''Get it together'' and Jimi mimicks his voice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmNPlIo-QW8 here at 0:23)

Yes, it's an essential, then everyone should have it. For those who have not, a short extract from "Becoming Jimi Hendrix", pg 79:

"Ernie [Isley, who was only eleven at the time] often watched Jimi quitly sit and play his guitar while looking out the Isley's front window: 'Jimi would practice phrases over and over again, turn then inside out, break then in half, break then in quarters, play then slow, play then fast...Jimi would even use the guitar to do his talking for him: 'How are you doing, Jimi?' 'Bading dada dooo' on the guitar. 'Is it cold outside?' 'Wheeooooow'."

    Got any quotes?

So, in the studio Jimi also "mimicked sounds he heard around him", apart from the, above, 'thank you' and imitating the sound of a brass instrument with Curtis Knight, I can't remember hearing much else in the way of voice or other being 'mimicked' in his early recordings. But, when given the chance, why would he not continue playing in the studio as he did outside it? The most obvious would be the machine gun fire and ricochets in the studio SSB.

The wah guitar in Still Raining Still Dreaming is kind of "talking".

For me, Jimi making the sound of war, crying, screaming and wind are just awe inspiring. Saying thank you on his guitar was really just a little humor.

Yeah, this is "mindless summer fun" :-). Was always awed by his crying guitar overdub in "Drifting", at 3:12 till the end.

'In his concert at the L.A. Forum in 69' he curses out a fan using his guitar. He makes it say "FU motherfucker" and "FU too". He does it right before he goes into Voodoo Child'

Nice!!! The news article quoted in Eyewitness '69/'70 confirms "Foxey Lady" and "Purple Haze" but adds "Machine Gun" which it states is one of "several unreleased songs from the 'Band Of Gypsys' album" played. I'm guessing the only other possible BOG song played would have been "Message To Love" based on other set lists from around the time.
