And always nice to see this excellent shot of this cool duo from Jimi's 'deprived' childhood.

Unfortunately no one has given any detail on Jimi, or George's tours/gigs and the specific roles they performed. Not too lowly one would imagine, considering how often George is spoken of. Also interesting how many of Jimi's pre Experience musical (& female) associates were from Georgia, Atlanta specifically.

From what I can gather the side men on the Chitlin Circuit often had to act as assistants to the main stars, I'm not sure what they did but I take it generally they ran errands, got the pizza's/coffee and looked after the stage clothes maybe - that type of thing. Maybe it was cheaper to do that than employ back stage staff. Maybe doing this is how Jimi got some of his gigs from helping out back stage. I bet he didn't like it very much though...sounds a bit humiliating.. I remember I think Kevin Rowland meeting Gino Washington band and he couldn't believe they had to get the pizza...sorry can't find the quote.

When Hendrix made it I think he sometimes ironed his own stage costumes and clothes (according to the Sharon Lawrence biog) so presumably he knew his way around an iron :-) I don't where else he would have learnt to do this. If that is true of course.

Well, this topic of assistants as well as performers needs research because it's speculation. We don't know if it existed whether it was humiliating or not... that depends on someone's point of view. When someone is really down, they often look forward to anything that they feel elevates them. (I cleaned offices to work my way through college, and I'll bet that any well off CEO that did that would not do it now. What may be humiliating now wasn't humiliating back then.)

I can truly believe that Jimi may have ironed his own clothes because although he was a study in emotional contrasts, a jealous lover, for instance, sometimes he was so incredibly grounded that he had attitudes that were very developed and evolved.

A gig with Uncle Sam will certainly adjust one's character. (been there, done that, heh heh ...)

A nice photo of Jimi appears at 6.24 of this clip... I don't see it here in the Pre-London photos, including several from Joey Dee's 1965 Buffalo gig.

    Does anyone recognize it? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVD5GfZa0j0

The photo has been around for a while and is known to most of us here. It comes up on a Google search.

    Re: Pre-London photos only

It does appear that the photo is from the Joey Dee gig. It looks as though it was taken moments before or after one that appears in this article about the Buffalo venue:

    http://www.parousiabuff.com/shows/pa...at-mcvans-1980

The guitar strap looks the same and is adjusted the same in both photos... Jimi's hair is the same including the tufts at the ear.

I also see the photo in another article where the citation is to a Joey Dee gig but is referenced as being in NYC... not sure if Jimi ever played in any Joey Dee gig there. One of Jimi's postcards to Al references appearing with Joey Dee at Revere Beach (Boston), so Jimi did perform with Joey Dee in more locations than Buffalo.
