The first of three versions of ‘Substitute’ is released on Robert Stigwood’s new

Shel Talmy, ousted as the band’s producer, takes a breach of contract court action against The Who. Talmy was awarded a large part of the royalties on The Who’s recordings for the next five years, this meant The Who would play as many live gigs as they could as this would be their main source of income for several years. This is a very similar scenario to the Hendix/Chalpin case the following year, when most of Hendrix’ earnings were held in escrow pending the outcome of the two court cases: Reprise in the US, and Polydor for the UK. Only the Reprise US case was “settled”, in 1968, prior to Hendrix’ death, but this gave Chalpin a 2 percent royalty backdated and for a further three years (which would have included his new single & LP, when they were released , as well as the entire sales earnings from the BOG’s LP in the US].

25 LIFE magazine cover article “LSD: The Exploding Threat of the Mind Drug that Got Out of Control” Warnings about the down side of LSD. Loudon Wainwright contributes on the negative side of drug use, in a reasonable, well considered manner. But this is really just the opening shot in a sustained and deliberate government program to eliminate LSD/psychedelics from the US, entirely. The obvious raison d’etre for this is they felt the widespread use of these drugs will undermine their authority. They were pushed into this by the establishment hierarchy of the medical psychological establishment and the drug companies etc who felt their controlling sway over vast swathes of US society was being undermined and increasingly portrayed as little better than a hoax.
