1964-03-XX /04-XX? Grand National Club, Montreal, Canada

    March/April 1964
    Montreal, Grand National Club, Canada
Isley Brothers (with Hendrix). Hendrix meets 16-year-old drummer Buddy Miles, who is playing with Ruby and the Romantics. “Shout was the Isley’s big number, and when they got into it their lead guitarist, off to the side, would put on a show of his own. He did flip-flops, played the guitar behind his back, ate the strings, and did splits—all at the same time, it seemed. He had a ribbon tied to his arm*, and one tied to his leg*; and he wore an earring in one ear*, and had an outrageous pompadour1. He turned on the crowd and the Isley Brothers too; he lent a showman novelty to the group as well as an excellent lead guitar. later I went backstage to meet this cat. He was Jimmy Hendrix, a real strange, retiring cat. I was so facinated that I kept touching Jimmy as if to make sure he was real. Not at all like his image onstage. I began to hang out with Jimi” Buddy claims Jimi is selling methedrine, that he keeps in a small baby bottle.
*Buddy [or quite likely Henderson exaggerating] is getting a bit carried away here. Photos at this time
show nothing of the sort, he is always wearing smart band uniform and with straightened,
smart, only fashionably longer hair. The rest of it sounds okay, but a tad ‘overdone’, they did give
    him a small solo spot
1There is no evidence of Jimi ever having a pompadour style never mind an “outrageous” one
