Re: New Jimi Hendrix album with unreleased songs coming in March

I was in London on tuesday at Spiritland near King Cross where we attended a listening of the new album (5 first songs) with Eddie Kramer who answered to some questions from the assistance (around 70 international media).

Being somewhat familiar with the "Mannish Boy" session, I'll say that Eddie did good job with the composite, assembling something more listenable than any of the takes I'd previously heard. It certainly has a richer sound quality, and whatever vocal and instrumental takes he patched together came together fairly well. That said, I hope the rest of the album is better.

Seems it will be as forgettable and ordinary as VoN & PH&A going by Mannish Boy

Well, i like that "Mannish Boy" track!
It's funny, i don't recall Buddy's snare drum ever sounding like that before. Almost as if he borrowed a snare from Mitch...
Maybe Kramer has discovered sample replacement...?

I doubt sincerely Buddy is playing drums on this recording. Buddy was in Chicago on April 24 performing with Muddy Waters for the live part of Muddy's Fathers and Sons LP.

Is it just me or does nearly $13 seem outrageous for a single?

You’re probably right, Yazid. I just had another intensive listening session and the drumming style really sounds like Buddy's, more so than on all the outtakes (which sound much more tentative and insecure). Buddy must have left for Chicago the next day.
I really like how Eddie assembled all the different parts, only the ending is a bit weak. Back in the days Jimi did a lot of punch-ins himself to repair mistakes on a lot of his recordings, so tasteful Frankensteining doesn't bother me at all.

Thanks Yazid, Kees for the posts and comments [and the time to reply to a private message elsewhere Yazid ;-)]

The session this is from has not been detailed as well as some other sessions as per personnel in attendance.

Kramer has manipulated the sound very well and the edits are a credit as the song feels right overall. That it falls away, as Kees highlights, is maybe because this is a radio edit that we have and it runs longer overall.

Given that work from Eddie it can be tough to hear who is playing as the sound has changed to quite a degree, as in the case of the drumming. I always had it down as Miles but here it sounds a little different, a little more tentative. That's not a trait we associate with Miles!

Though still a little doubtful, a doubt that'll sit with me until I get to sit with the release I'm leaning towards Miles if for no other reason than it was my gut feeling from the get go.

What I would like to know if it is possible is to find out; who exactly attended that session besides the BoG line up and Devon.

Looking forward to the awesome mastering on Foxy Lady from Hoepla! I agree with you Experiencereunited, that artwork is something else.

I see a blend of his iconic 1967 Crimea soldier's jacket with his 1969 Woodstock outfit. It may represent the two time periods of the music on the A/B of the single, 1967 and 1969, or it may be familiar clothing made to resonate commercially with a larger audience.

I have the same feeling about the touch-up album artwork as well. It was rare to see him wear jeans, and with that jacket it just feels wrong. I see new concert photos popping up all the time, but I suppose they don't want to pay to use those.

I feel like the artwork department is taking a turn for the worse on these new releases. They just can't seem to replicate his psychedelic fashion style whatsoever. Won't stop me from buying it though!

I dont know if I dislike the 45 artwork. It certainly has a lot going on and arouses your curiosity which good artwork should do. I think I may grow to love it but not sure. At first look it is overwhelming.

The upcoming LP art I have yet to see anyone say anything good about and I think it is the worst cover for a Jimi release ever. Wont stop me from buying it though. Great to get some new officially released Jimi.

"Hendrix then presented a rough sketch of the medium-tempo ballad "Send My Love To Linda." With Hendrix's Guitar and live vocal setting the pace, Cox and Miles established the tempo, Though Hendrix had only developed the song's rudiments, one take evolved into a lively, extended jam session. Encouraged by the group's progress, Hendrix began a second take. this effort was even stronger in parts than the first, but both takes lacked an ending. Fives takes in all made it clear that, despite its promise, " Send My Love to Linda" was not yet fully developed."
