NYTimes is claiming that "Mannish Boy" is NOT a composite but a single complete take. I have no reason to think they know what they're talking about but thought it thread-worthy:

..and the sentence "Jimi Hendrix took his brand-new Band of Gypsys, with Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass, into the studio for the first time on April 22, 1969.'
    Uh yeah....right...

    Exactly.

Although had Jimi referred to them earlier in one (only) interview (18 December Melody Maker - UK) as his "new group the Band of Gypsys," it is interesting that they were initially advertised for only the 2 Hogmanay shows where they were just listed as individuals not a "group" with a name:

    Sunday 14 December 1969
    USA (NY)
NEW YORK TIMES (page 196) [usual B&W ad.] Fillmore East
    Special New Year’s Eve Shows
    Wednesday, December 31
    7:30 & 10:30 PM
    JIMI HENDRIX
    BUDDY MILES
    Billy Cox
    And
    The Voices
    Of East Harlem
    Tickets $5.00-$6.00-$7.00
    Available Only At the Fillmore
Or By Mail Prior To 12/19/69
    [etc....]

    Saturday 27 December (3 Jan) 1969
    USA
    BILLBOARD (page 15) Talent
‘From The Music Capitals of the World’
    New York
Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Miles and Billy Cox give two performances at Fillmore East, Thursday (1) in addition to their two New Year's Eve shows. . . .

It was only after they had, apparently almost last minute, finally decided to add the two New Year's night shows that 'Band of Gypsys' was mentioned in an advert and then only as if it were a project/stage play title: "Jimi Hendrix: [in a] Band of Gypsys [starring], Jimi Hendrix Buddy Miles, Billy Cox"
The two equally large photos flanking the later ad show Buddy's (& his management's position) quite clearly I think. I think it fairly obvious that there was behind the scenes wrangling going on between Jimi and Buddy and/or their managements. Billy clearly stated in one interview that this was indeed the case, that Buddy's ego was the problem and the primary reason (other than that they were only employed for the duration of the project to make this one LP for Capitol, which Buddy (& sometimes Billy), it seems, had/have forgotten. And later, after the project, play a one off charity gig), for them not being employed for longer than the completion of the project (they were employees) to make this one LP:

    Sunday 28 December 1969
    USA (NY)
NEW YORK TIMES (page D 3) [B&W ad, usual ‘Fillmore logo’ style:] BILL GRAHAM Presents In New York. Tuesday Night New Groups. Every Week at 8 p.m. 3 New Groups, I New Light Show – $1.50 at the door.
    ------------------------------------
    Tonight At 8 & 11.30

[The BOG title addition has not reached this column's editor yet, it seems. Ed.:]
(Page D 14) Who Makes Music & Where ‘Wednesday’ [...] Fillmore East Presents Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Miles, Billy Cox and the Voices Of East Harlem. 7:30 & 10:30 P.M.[...]
‘Thursday’ [...] Fillmore East Presents Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Miles, Billy Cox and the Voices Of East Harlem. 8:00 & 11:30 P.M.[...]
(Page D 27) [B&W photo of JH after trial, ‘Jimi Hendrix rocks the New Year in at the Fillmore East, Wednesday, Thursday.’] ‘You Don’t Have To Be High’ [article on Joshua Light Show]

The subsequent album charts also have just the individuals' names in place of a group name, ie no group name and only the album itself listed as: 'Jimi Hendrix: A Band of Gypsys' - as per the concert advert.

Hi, hope how enjoyed the listening session. these Q & A things with Eddie rarely are uploaded online so could you detail Eddie's answers of insights into Jimi please? Would really appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
