Smile Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Chile Documentary

    Hi people,

Dont know if this is the one aired in the states the other day that the europeans couldnt get...? I`m not too sure it is. Anyone know?

Pretty sure its the one given away as part of the new WCSB boxset... This links definatly for the Brits, not so sure if the link will work elsewhere.

    10.45pm WED 22nd, BBC 4 -

    Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Chile Documentary

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00tw2db

40 years after Jimi Hendrix's death on September 18th 1970, this film tells Jimi Hendrix's life story in his own words and is narrated by funk legend Bootsy Collins in the soft, authoritative voice of Hendrix himself.
Blending archive footage, artefacts, news archive and rare performance footage, director Bob Smeaton's film takes us from Hendrix's childhood in Seattle, through his spell in the army and on to his time on the chitlin circuit backing the likes of the Isley Brothers and Little Richard, his 'discovery' by ex-Animal Chas Chandler in New York, the formation of the Experience in the UK and his launch and instant popstardom in London in 1966, his stellar festival appearances at Monterey and Woodstock, his artistic progression, his last British concert at the end of August 1970 at the Isle of Wight Festival and his tragic death in Notting Hill, choked on his own vomit and red wine.

Same video. Hope it's released in 5.1 uncompressed audio. The broadcast here in the states was in 2.0 stereo only.

Still looks like it's not the complete version that will be with the boxset,
only 75 minutes. That's about the same length of the one broadcast in
    the US without the commercials.

The BBC 4 version left out the Berkeley footage of Voodoo Child from the early show, all footage from the Lulu show, Foxy lady from Maui and Jimi riding a dune buggy so it was heavily edited compared to the US broadcast. Hopefully the DVD will include a lot of extra footage as I felt the doc left out a lot and was very basic.

I saw about half of the BBC 4 version last night (taped the rest) and although it just goes through the story that we know by heart, it's a nice idea to use Jimi's own words throughout. Bootsy, as Jimi's voice, works quite well and the whole thing seems nicely edited (visually).
I had never seen that footage of Olympia 1966 before! How much of it exists?

There seemed plenty of (in my case) unseen footage & I enjoyed the section on Jimi's army days,Obviously it didn't go into great detail on certain aspects,But all in all a good overview of Jimi's career.

Love Bootsy, but he's a pussy when it comes to Jimi (no doubt well meaning [oh, poor tragic Jimi voice, oh; life was so hard- give us a break!) Jimi spoke in animated, lively, often funny, frequently "camp" style, not like a "oh, poor me life is so tough style, he was an amusing dude, and if not happy, sometimes a grumpy fuck you style, this "humble bumble" get to f'k, he was no sad little bo "Oh my life was so hard" give us a break - From his earliest professional days he had the babes, smokin the weed, whizz, playin with the best dudes, treated like a star on the chitlin. Not rich, but hey kickin ass, was havin' more fun than the Stones. Billy told it. BB too he knows the score, cut the crap

From what I have read, he was very humble down to Earth for being the best guitarist in the world. Not saying at times he didnt put people in their place and maybe encourage them to stop trying becasue there was no hope , but I dont think he was arrogant about his abilities

    * Voodoo Child Slight Return 5-30-1970 Early Show!!!!!.......(UK)missing video and narration/picks up at'Voodoo Child'
Is this right? It sounded like soundboard quality to me. All I've ever heard from this show was audience. please say i'm wrong. I'd love to know that there's a soundboard of this show out there. The audio clip they played is blistering.

(update) - I see that this is now up of Wolfgang's Vault. Too bad it can't be downloaded.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Chile Documentary

Bootsy was about the nearest you could get really to approximate someone like Jimi..it was much better than some kind of official wooden voice over..it captured something of his jivey character..

I think Hendrix had the joi de vivre of someone who'd truly been through hell..and I can understand that. He was a bluesman at heart..but the old blues guys were not neccesarily somber ppl-they often had a great sense of humour and liked having a good time. There was a lot of wit and humour in the music if you listen to it. They also tended to be very nice natural down to earth people.

Re: Jimi Hendrix: Voodoo Chile Documentary

Just to clean up my previous posting about the differences in the BBC and US versions...
I finally got 'hold' of the 'official' DVD...
So actually there are 3 different edits of the program....UK 75mts...US 90mts...Official 96mts....
The official(only version with extended 'Hear My Train Comin' video footage) seems to be the UK version...with the missing and extended parts re-instated.
The US has completely different video footage in parts and a modified ending with different audio....
So...the official is the most complete of the 3...but I kept them all anyway.

i compared the u.s. broadcast (90min) to the official dvd (92min).
the only difference i found between the two was the inclusion of the new clip of hear my train from berkeley on the official dvd. this new clip is about 1.5min, and not the 3min stated at
    http://crosstowntorrents.org/showpos...6&postcount=79

the info at the below thread is also incorrect, because v.c. first show clip is on the official dvd as well.

Maybe there are 4 edits then...my US version ends with Voodoo Child playing over the closing credits, has the Monterey Footage of 'Like A Rollin' Stone' instead of the Corn Exchange.etc...
My official has Valleys of Neptune playing over the closing credits...
no big thing...but there are at least 3 different edits I have/seen...
To me the UK version is the official version minus parts altogether.
