In the US on Capitol ,in Canada on Reprise ,in the UK on Track Records and Polydor ,France on Barclay,Capitol/Fame in Argentina,Polydor and Karusell in Germany among others

Mexican white label promo uses different spelling of "Gipsies "

Band Of Gypsys German 1993 Polydor CD pressing 847 237-2. Front Cover, Back Cover, CD, and insert. This CD contains 3 bonus tracks that were recorded at the Fillmore East originally put out on the Band of Gypsys 2 vinyl. Band Of Gypsys 2 never made the transition to CD so this was the only place to get these tracks on CD for quite a while. The bonus tracks were dropped on later and other releases. As with most of the German Polydor CDs the sound on this one is very good.

Since Experiencereunited has kindly opened up the door for BOG CDs I believe it's important to show the US promo CD w/lime green target label design (similar to first US vinyl pressing label from 1970).

Top row shows Japanese Polydor issue CD.

Also shown from Capitol records, is US BOG advance cassette from mid 90's.
MCA also issued Band of Gypsys cassettes in the 90's in US.

Check out the imported Polydor cassette version .Same as the Experiencereunited posted CD w/ the 3 extra tracks.

Another German vinyl reissue ,this time on Karrussel

Also shown is a psychedelic BOG / Track Records ad from July 29,1970 issue of OZ magazine that I've never seen before

bottom: sealed 4 track tape of BOG .4 track tapes were just about phased out by 8 tracks and the "new" format cassettes by mid 1970

Re: Band of Gypsys vinyl from around the world

    Great question!

I cannot with any certainty say exactly when these were pressed by Polydor Brazil but I can tell you this BOG is part of a series of the first 5 releases with unique to Brazil numbers:

    Smash Hits LPG 624.010 MONO
Electric Ladyland LPG 624.011 MONO single disc only (see end of ELL thread for label scans )
Axis Bold as Love LPG 624.024 MONO
Are You Experienced? LPG 624.032 MONO
Band of Gypsys LPS 624.510 STEREO note S prefix change for Stereo

I'd guess that these were all issued/re-issued around 1970 with the switch over from Mono to Stereo
.As your scan clearly shows the matrix number(dead wax by label) is the Track catalog number (2406 002)not a Polydor reissue number.
Had they been released chronologically, I feel that the lowest number starting with 624. would have gone with the AYE? first ,Axis second and so on.
But why the big jump from ( .10,.11, .24 and .32)all under 100 numbers for first 4 all the way up to .500 for BOG?

again just a semi-educated guess on my part okla70homa.

    anyone??

Rare Track Records cassette release. Did they release it with their original puppets cover earlier, I haven't seen one? I think this may be the only Track cassette release of this LP?

Re: Band of Gypsys vinyl from around the world

    Interesting question. Nice reply Billo.
Here's my listing for that Who release:
2406009 Who Sell Out, Backtrack 9 - The Who
Yes, 1970 as a release date for this recording.

Now the BOG pressing in question. Sorry to disappoint here but dating a pressing is close to impossible through either / and the Cat' number / Matrix (dead wax) number. Factor in global pressing plants and that simply compounds the question. To further muddy the waters Track was never an independant label.

I didn't think I had any Polydor BOG pressings in the collection but I found a repressing "SUPER" as I checked for my Track copies.
The cat' number is just that, a Cat' number. This number (found on the label and cover, 2406 006) is attached to both copies of my Track pressing. The original Track "Puppet" cover and the slightly later issue gatefold IOW pic sleeve,. Both of these Track pressings carry the following Dead Wax matrix number:
    2406002 [stamped]

The Polydor (clearly a repressing) LP has a cover and label Cat number of 2408-005 (surfixed by SUPER on the rear cover and spine). The Dead Wax matrix number for both sides of this pressing carries this number:
    22406 002 [stamped]
but on side A only, scratched above the stamped number, is 2480005

Couple of questions. When did Polydor get licence to press this LP ? Are all pressings from Polydor Brazil scratched dead wax numbers?

Re: Band of Gypsys vinyl from around the world

    Polydor Brazil De Luxe pressings

No FF they are NOT all scratched dead wax pressings. It appears that the only one that IS "scratched" remains the subject of our discussion BOG Brazil .

I'm seeing stamped matrix Polydor numbers for Smash Hits 184 138 (also German #)
    Axis 184 110 (German,Israel #)
    Are you Exp? 184 085 German ,Israel,S.Africa#)
you can see these numbers as well on the bottom of the label (six o'clock)

but the ELL has it's own unique stamper number that matches the label.catalog # 624.011

    take a look

Re: Band of Gypsys vinyl from around the world

Thanks Billo. If the other pressings are stamped then the fact this pressing (BOG) is scratched suggests to me a later pressing.
I asked as Polydor stamp the pressings as a matter of course rather than scratch.
anyone have an answer for the first question? Do we have a fixed date for the 1st European Polydor BOG pressing?
Gonna study your scans Billo, thanx for these.

full album acetate for Band of Gypsys , mastered by Bob Ludwig at Sterling Sound in NYC

hard to read writing on labels but it's dated 2 18 70 (at bottom of label)

allegedly Jimi's personal copy , hard to verify but scarce just the same

Not sure what you mean by this FF. They seem pretty independant by what I've read? Did they not sign artists and release their records, often producing them as well? I realise Track Records (Kit Lambert & Chris ) were pressed and distributed by Polydor, but what other input did Polydor have?

I have it that the Puppet cover was only replaced in November 1970

A licence from whom? From what I have seen, he was paid for the shows by Bill Graham and the Lp was organised, recorded, and paid for by Hendrix? He only handed over the finished LP to Capitol, not the master tapes, they would be Hendrix' property? He was signed to Track/Polydor, Barclay and Reprise (Canada) outside of the US and the deal with Chalpin/Columbia was only for the US [Don't know about Canada, from the photos I see now it came out there on Reprise? It has a dual matrix - Reprise and Capitol, wonder what the deal was, or if there was one?].
Track/Polydor & Barclay could still release what they liked in the rest of the world. As it turned out Chalpin and UK Decca appear to have basically lost their case against Track/Polydor and the Hendrix Estate, when it eventually came to court in London in 1973. From what I can make out all they got was the right to keep selling the studio (only) cuts from their two crap Curtis Knight LP'S and the three singles (only). No free Lp, no percentage.
Chalpin doesn't appear to have taken action against Barclay (France - and few other European countries) [and Reprise (Canada)?]

Not sure just what is going on here, I have replied to this twice and it seems the post(s) are not showing. Wondering if this will show up!

Track could and did ACT independently but Polydor are / where the parent company. It is not a matter if Polydor had involvement with the day to day of Track. A more recent example would be MCA. MCA acted as an independent company but the parent group was / is Universal.

I have it that the Puppet cover was only replaced in November 1970 ..................... from?

I am unsure if Polydor had an original licence to press this LP. Any licence would have been granted to Track records (to whom Jimi / JHE were /was signed). I do not know if Polydor (being the parent company) had automatic rights to pressing / distributing this product. As you already point out, Track ACTED Independently. So while Track existed as a company could Polydor also distribute / manufacture this LP. Once Track folded they would automatically take on any licence held by Track originally as they are the parent company.
