    JIMI HENDRIX - SHOKAN UPGRADE (3 Tracks)aka(ATM 221-223 Gypsy Suns and R...etc Rev A)

like ship in the night, I'm passing this 3 tracks, the full set was uploaded at demonoid, the original comment it's very interesting, here it is:

    hi everyone,
new collection is available, 3CD of Shokan material. below is a
long description for people interested. several people have this set,
so they should be able to hook you up with it.
    --------------------------------
This set collects material recorded at Jimi's house on Traver Hollow Road
in the summer of 1969. During the period from July-September, Jimi spent a
great deal of time there writing, rehearsing, and jamming, and several
tapes have surfaced containing recordings from this time. Most were
probably recorded on the 4-track machine that Eddie Kramer installed at
Jimi's request; some are possibly recorded on 2-track. the first 2 tracks
on Disc 1 were recorded by Gerry Guida on a portable reel recorder.

Although this material has often been referred to as the "Woodstock
Rehearsals", much of this could never have been considered for inclusion at
that show. While the tape thought to be from August 14 (Lover Man, Spanish
Castle Magic, Hear My Train) probably represents rehearsals (and possibly
the Izabella / Beginning tape also), most of the rest is just "jamming back
    at the house". In addition, this isn't a "complete" Shokan collection;
other recordings include the Ephron jams (the "At His Best" collection) and
possibly the jams with a 2nd guitarist that were collected on "Healing
Power". Those have been archived previously.

Most of the material here has circulated widely, although surprisingly much
has not yet been bootlegged. Portions of these recordings have previously
appeared on the collectors' sets "Woodstock Rehearsals", Drinking Wine",
and "Healing Power". Some of those are upgraded here.

Not one minute of this material has seen official release, and it might
turn out that it never will; the sound of these recordings is not
pro-quality. Thus all of this material comes from collectors' tapes.
There's also little definite information regarding recording dates and
personnel. While most of these recordings are thought to be from August,
some could also be from July or September. In ordering the blocks of
tracks, the online version of "Plug Your Ears" was used as a starting
point. Although many of the dates given there are speculative, Kees has
put a lot of thought into these recordings and track ordering, and this
seemed like a good basis for arrangement.

Because there was no official reference, pitch could not be determined with
certainty either, nor could consistency of tuning between blocks of tracks.
The lowest generation material was exactly at concert pitch, and for all
tracks with vocals by Jimi, vocals sounded correct at concert pitch.
Therefore all of the tracks were adjusted to match this tuning. In most
cases this required less than a 2% adjustment, so most people won't notice
the difference. But at least all of the material is at the same tuning
now, and if someone wants to play along with the music this makes it much
    easier.

This is a compilation from different tape sources. Because of minor
repairs that were done, it shouldn't be considered a "raw sources"
collection. There were many clicks scattered throughout the recordings,
and several bursts of static. Most of these were repaired, although some
that indicated tape stoppages on the original recording were kept. Pitch
of some tracks was adjusted as mentioned above. In a couple of cases where
two different sources were composited together to make the most complete
version of a song, some EQ was applied to the parts to make the sound
consistent. There were many sudden or gradual changes in recording level,
so volume adjustments have been made to even these out.

    Here's the track list:

Jam with Flute (from JA3/4/5 "leakage" channel) 13:28
Jam (JA3) (Flute jam mixed out) 4:09
Jams / Villanova Junction (JA4-5) (Flute jam mixed out) 7:17

    Some notes on individual tracks:

The first 2 tracks were earlier thought to have been recorded in Beverly
Hills in mid-1969; John McDermott and Gerry Guida recently confirmed that
they were recorded on Guida's portable reel machine at the Shokan house.

Sundance (1) circulates incomplete on the highest-quality tapes; the
remainder was edited on from a different source.

Freeform Jam (JA 2) is in two parts. The second half is one of the few
Shokan tracks that hasn't circulated widely. The two parts don't connect
together, but probably are from the same jam.

The takes of Izabella are a little confusing. Most transfers of this
section start with the tracks in the following order: Izabella (15),
Izabella (17), and Message to Love (21). Later in the transfer come
Izabella (18) and Izabella (16). (16) has been described as a different
mix of (15), with lower percussion. It's far from certain that this is a
different mix at all; only in a few places does the percussion sound lower
in the mix, and even in these places the difference is minor. (16) has
nonetheless been included as a possible alternate mix at the end of Disc 2.
However, (18) precedes (16) on the transfer, and we've gone with the guess
that this is actually the start of the recording, with (18) as the earliest
take followed by (15/16), then (17), then Message to Love (21). (18) also
sounds like the least-developed take, which strengthens this guess.

Jimi doesn't play on all of these tracks. There are two songs with vocals
by Larry, "Why I Sing the Blues" and "Ain't Got Nobody", where Jimi's
playing is not evident. It's also not apparent on the Flute Jams (JA 8-10)
that precede "Why I Sing the Blues".

The final block of material consists of the instrumental jams that Jimpress
indexes as JA3/JA4/JA5. The first 4-minute jam (JA 3) has bass along with
the guitar and drums, and sounds a little more developed than the rest of
this recording, so it has been given its own track entry. The remainder is
just Jimi and Mitch and is little more than fragments and explorations, and
with many tape cuts between the various portions. Kees has speculated from
the themes quoted in this section that it might come from after Woodstock,
possibly early September. So it was placed last in the collection. Most
circulating copies have a repeated section at the end; this has been removed.

This recording was likely done on 4-track, and whether due to oversight or
design, one of the tracks has been replaced by an unrelated instrumental
with flute for about the first 13 minutes. Interestingly, mixes of this
first portion also exist where these two recordings have been separated and
presented in mono, presumably by someone with access to the 4-track tape.
The flute jam by itself is included as track 7 on Disc 3. This was also on
the collection "Drinking Wine" in a de-noised version; here it is in its
unaltered form. It's possible to hear Jimi on guitar in this mix, which is
difficult at best with the full stereo mix. Finally, the last two tracks
on Disc 3 have the first portion of JA3/JA4/JA5 main jam in a mono mix,
    with the flute jam removed.

Don't get me wrong, but yes, the text was posted around 6 months
ago on Demonoid by mjimih, however, Rev.A compilation was actually
created more than 2 years ago. By mjimih? I'm not really sure so I
would like if someone can definitely confirm that.
    Thanks in advance.

    P.S.
Most of the text from the info file has been posted on
In From The Storm site nearly 4 years ago so it couldn't
have been created by mjimih 6 months ago.

I just love seeing this new Avatar next to my Screen name
I have a strong connection with it, as I was standing about 10 feet behind where that shot was taken *sigh*.
If I told you this pic was taken during Machine Gun you'd all think I was nutz . . . . . Wouldn't you?

    4 this upgrade.

Emil: "Created mjimih 6 months ago" it means the torrent thread was created... it is an automatic phrase by demonoid site, not meaning the text file below the phrase.. cheers !

Yes, this is correct. There are only 2 versions of this set; The original and the Rev.A version, and this is the txt file that came with the Rev.A version. Quoting phrases like "this is a new set" will of course often lead to misunderstandings, and I remember I had to go back and check it myself when I saw the post at Demonoid 6 months ago ;-) And btw: mjimih (MJ of JPIO?) didn't create this create this set.

EXACTLY! That's how I remember it too. I was also mislead by the
"new collection is available" phrase when posted 6 months ago
on Demonoid. Otherwise I wouldn't remember it and wouldn't pay
    any attention.
You know, Hans-Peter, it's such a relief to find people
who's mind works the same way.
I do feel so lonely sometimes, in fact a little more often then
    just "sometimes"...

"Anyway, thanks to the one who created it, whoever it might be!"

Yes, of course! I wasn't arguing about it for a second!
    Great compilation.
And nice upload Pancho! Thank you!

    Hi Charlie,

The full 3CD set is here: http://crosstowntorrents.org/showthread.php?241
I compared that set to your tapes, and i'm sorry to say the Shokan material on the ATM set is superior.
We're not so sure about the Crash Landing stuff yet and the other 23july70 disc has at least 1 great upgrade (to me, anyway), but i'll PM you about this!
    Thanks!

Re: JIMI HENDRIX - SHOKAN UPGRADE (3 Tracks)aka(ATM 221-223 Gypsy Suns and R...etc Re

I have recently received a few ATM discs from a fellow trader via snail mail. These were to help fill a few gaps where I either had Rev A's but not the original ATM's or vice-versa. Anyway to cut a long story short one of the DVD's I received contained ATM 221-223 with a file set date of 06/02/2007. I was interested to find out whether these were actually ATM 221-223 or ATM 221-223 Rev A files, which wasn't as straight forward as with most other revisions as track timings are unaffected here with the revision simply being 3 tracks from a lower gen source.

Looking at the information provided by Hans-Peter Johnsen ATM 221-223 was issued on 10.05.2004 and ATM 221-223 Rev A on 26.12.2005. However in my search I came accross a site Called "Justin's Lossless Bootz" [http://justinsbootz.blogspot.com/201...-atm-221.html] where ATM 221-223 had been posted as 3 rar files (available for download via Megaupload). I know you take your chances with these types of downloads as quite otfen there is no real lineage provided. Anyway to satisfy my curiosity regarding file set dates and to try and find out if the 2007 file sets I had received were ATM 221-223 or Rev A I downloaded the rar files. To my astonishment the file sets are dated 26/09/2002. And what is more is that the MD5 checksum from ATM 221-223 torrented at CTT can be used to verify the 2002 file set. So the only conclusion I can draw (unless I am missing something fundamental) is that the computer the files were created on had the date set incorrectly in the BIOS/operating system.

I am sorry to ramble on at legnth but I am puzzled. I try to collect the earliest file sets possible as a rule but in this case I think I may consign Justin's files to my recycle bin.

If anyone can offer an explanation other than the one I have come up with I would be most greatful.
