Re: 1969-01-04 'Happening For Lulu' BBC TV Shepherd's Bush, London, England

    Saturday 4 January 1969
London, BBC TV Centre, ‘A Happening For Lulu’. JHE
BBC 1 TV broadcast this live between 18:16 and 19:01
With: Johnny Harris and his orchestra (Lulu)
Vocal backing: Sue & Sunny with Kay (Lulu)
    Dance: Pan’s People
    Choreography: Flick Colby
The Iveys (wearing suits and ties. aka (later) Badfinger) “Maybe Tomorrow”
& “Her Daddy's A Millionaire” mimed to pre-recorded backing, with live vocal
    Design: J. Roger Lowe
    Producer: Stanley Dorfman
Radio Times: “Among the guests Lulu will welcome tonight is Jimi Hendrix whose sensational rendering of Dylan's song ' All along the watch-tower ' recently rocketed him back into the Top Ten.”

    Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (36)
    Hey Joe (41) (Billy Roberts)
Sunshine Of Your Love (15) (Jack Bruce, Pete Brown & Eric Clapton)

Jack Bruce: “The first time I saw it [Jimi playing ‘Sunshine’] was on the Lulu TV show. I watched that because he was on it. I’m not a huge Lulu fan although I like her very much as a person, but I wouldn’t have watched that show for Lulu, but I knew he was on it so I watched it live. I remember watching it and being blown away by the fact that he played that and the fact that he dedicated it to us. So that’s the first time really that I was aware of him doing that.”

New Musical Express, (10 January) report by Terry Quinn: “I have the feeling that might be some time before Jimi Hendrix works on BBC-TV again! Last Saturday I was one of the lucky few in Studio 4 at London’s Television Centre watched the fantastic Mr. Hendrix make his first British TV appearance since his smash American tour… Viewers might remember that Jimi performed three numbers, although, as NME’s Richard Green happened to remark at the time: ‘Who’s counting?’
Well, producer Stanley Dorfman was. You see Jimi was only supposed to do two numbers and he threw the third at the last moment as a tribute to the Cream. For millions of fans - plus Richard Green - Jimi can do no wrong, but you can take it from me that last Saturday’s Jimi Hendrix Experience was one that Lulu, Stanley Dorfman and the BBC will remember for some time to come.”

Joey Molland [gtr, Badfinger]: “I’d seen the Iveys on TV (the Lulu show) and they wore suits and ties. I’d been through that and I wasn’t keen anymore . . . I was into rock ‘n’ roll music.”

Frank Zappa: "Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read."
