Re: 1967-01-19 The Speakeasy, London, England

    Thursday 19 January 1967
London W1, The Speakeasy, 48 Margaret Street, Fitzrovia, England. JHE
Although a small club it was a ‘celeb’ showcase gig. Many of the well known R&B/ ‘rock’ acts of the day played here.
‘Gypsy’ waistcoat; black satin shirt; red ‘iron cross’ necklace; the pinky ring; dark trousers; white/rose & black/rose strats w. red ‘cowboy’ strap.
    Concert between 22:00 and 04:00.
Many in the audience would have seen the group earlier that evening on Top Of The Pops, and/or read about him in the three main Thursday edition pop papers: Disc & Music Echo and Melody Maker had large articles about him, and Record Mirror had a full page colour ‘floating heads’ photo of him on the cover.
Noel was probably using Chas’ 4-string Gibson EB2 bass.
    JHE fee – Noel: “£47.10s.”

    Songs: unknown

DISC & MUSIC ECHO (page?) ‘The in scene where it all happens!’: Here’s a guide to five of the top clubs of the moment:
    [#4]:
Speakeasy, 45 Margaret Street, W.1.: American gangster decor, with wreath covered coffin for a reception desk, and infamous Chicago hoods immortalised at the long and comfortable bar.
Membership 4 gns. With 10s. entrance fee and 4s. drinks.
Patrons have included Rolling Stones, Small Faces, Spencer davis and Marianne Faithful.

Frank Zappa: "Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read."
