Re: George Odell (or Richard Penniman)?

I asked Rosa Lee Brooks about it, I haven't heard back from her. I sent her a copy of the photo. She keeps inviting me to jam with her and the band but I haven't.

    Update,

She says it is George with a "silver" wig on as Little Richard had a full head of hair and didn't need a wig!

I would not give much weight to her opinion. I suppose I could ask Johnny Echols who met Jimi while he was with Little Richard around the same time he was dating Rosa Lee. But as I've said before, I'm pretty sure John Goddard has other photos (sans Jimi) from the same show. I really see no reason why Goddard's word shouldn't settle the issue. It hardly seems likely that he went to an Odell show and forgot. There's a phone number on Goddard's website for Village Records. Maybe I'll just give him a call . . .

A rather simplistic line of reasoning. Anyway George had a full head of hair too and Richard wore wigs for effect. Does she think Tina Turner was bald?

Hey don't shoot the messenger! I was just passing it along. Since you all were discussing it. None of us were there except her. She might be mistaken but as I said I wasn't there, and actually don't really care. What performances did Little Richard wear a wig? I'm curious that's all. Pictures anyone?

I didn't I used the word "She", so I think it's clear - only talking about Rosa's comment. That you kindly passed on?

    Possibly

Hey, Rosa, was that 'a wig hat on your head'?

    I've just seen this.
Thanks for getting that confirmation Sharpstat.

I just read Steven Roby's mention of the photo in his book 'Becoming Jimi Hendrix'. A thought occurred to me which would clinch this once and for all. Goddard claims he was trying that night to take photos ONLY of Richard Penniman and that Jimi was "just a guitar player who kept getting in the way of me taking pictures of Little Richard."

Well, if that is TRUE then he would have OTHER photos of Little Richard from the same gig.
If he can produce one, that could clinch this.

He could have done this any time over the last fifty years.
The fact that he never has done that, confirms for me that I was right and, as confirmed by Rosa, this is 'Gorgeous' Theophilus Odell George and Hendrix, and Goddard has been caught in a small lie that he can't now admit to.

The curious can hear a couple of early 45's by Gorgeous G at 'Sir Shambling', interestingly at least one company he recorded for, 'Neptune', was also located at 1650 Broadway, New York:

Is Gorgeous George still living? I can't find anything on the internet about him being deceased.

Re: George Odell (or Richard Penniman)?

By the way, his name is Odell George, not George Odell ie (Theopholous Odell) 'Gorgeous' George.

    G. George: "If there was twelve acts on the show, I would change twelve times. I had about forty-some outfits, shoes, socks, rings, everything matched to a T...and my hair - you ain't never seen no hair like I had...I used to spray it blond. I could walk in, and it would bounce on my head".
