Re: Jimi Hendrix on Reel to Reel tape

Amazing guys, can't remember that those r to r's were ever sold here in the Netherlands.
But remember the excellent sound verry well. Still got an old TEAC stored away somewhere.
Remember that my first guitar playing was recorded on these in the early 70ies ,experimenting with "sound on sound" and different speeds in one track.
A friend/collleague guitarist used a Taperecorder preamp up until 12 years ago for distortion, gave a great sound also !!!!
Makes me wonder, were there ever Hendrix Albums released on 8track (A totally unknown format here in Europe)
And once again Billo thanks a lot for these great scans !!!!!

Just about everything was released on 8 track here in the states including all the original Hendrix albums. 8 track advantage was portabliity. You could listen in your car prior to cassettes being mainstream. Those awful track shifts (many times in the middle of a song) were there ultimate downfall for sure. Other than those harsh track shifts it really wasn't a bad analog format.

If it was really rare in Europe for those that don't know most eight track had two sides with 4 tracks on them and of limited length. A lot of record companies just decided if the time necessitates then it will shift tracks in the middle of a song! This resulted in brrrfff....... of incredible harshness sometimes in the middle of a song as it shifted to the next of 4 tracks on a side. Record companies would sometimes compensate for this by having a little extra prior to the shift and a little extra after the shift so no "music" was missed. It was still friggin' harsh to hear that track shift period.

Thanks for the info Expr, didn't know that about this harsh cutting of tracks.
By the way a question about your avatar. Is that Jimi & Leon playing together ?????
Or is it a fotomontage ????

you are welcome but I did describe it a little bit wrong. There was actually only one side to each tape and it had 4 tracks. The part about shifting tracks harshly was the main point I wanted to make. Been a long time since I listened to one. They are virtually impossible to find anymore and even the players are rare now. Amazing because they had pretty widespread acceptance for a while. 8 track probably died one of the quickest deaths ever for any format that had really gone mainstream. People couldn't wait to get rid of them.

As for the photo it is from a Speakeasy jam someone posted just a little while ago.

Hi everybody. I just joined and thought I'd share some of my reels. Most of these in the photos are still sealed.

    Oh boy, what joy :-)

If I had them they would NOT remain unopened :-)
The dual CL / ML reel too, nice. This is expensive to buy, if you can find a copy that is.
But, no War Heroes. Oh well :-(

Re: Jimi Hendrix on Reel to Reel tape

Thanks guys! I have opened copies of the sealed ones so no worries. They're worth a lot more sealed! I never did obtain a copy of War Heroes but I've seen them up for sale. Don't have A Film About JH soundtrack either. Damn it! :-(
You haven't heard music the way it was meant to be heard until you hear one those reels through McIntosh monoblocks and Klipsch La Scalas cranked way up... My player is a early/mid-70's Akai with GX glass heads.

Great set of Reel to Reels RH. Still amazes me that these R to R's were never issued here in the Netherlands. I know there were some German issues.
Still have an old Sony stashed away. The only inconvenience was allways the the finding of tracks, but soundwise they were great.!!!!!!

Yeah MS four hours in a row,or even 8 at slow speed LOL.
As mentioned, you couldn't buy R to R's with official material overhere,so what you used your Reel to Reel (or bandrecorder as it's called in dutch) for was recording records, though I prefered the records of course, and radio shows with the newest releases. And of course for home taping. Had some great experiments with sound on sound/ and playing overdubs in various speeds.Or using it as an echo device (Those old band echo's were great !!!) Even for preamping a guitar, which gave a great distortion!!!!
These are passed by modern technology off course. Though I still use an older digitall delay (dd 3) as it sounds better than the newer ones. But that's all guitarpyrotechnics LOL
Just to let your "drumheart" skip a beat, We had a little Jazz Festival in my hometown last weekend. Not much off interest, but one of the Headliners was Billy Cobham, and man he still got it. Awsome drummer in my opinion, not losing himself in to much noodling and soloing but, laying down incredible fills and timing !!!!
    Well off topic again. LOL
    all the best,
