OK - Gotta call you, and others in the anti-Douglas camp, on this. As we do value your opinions, and many of us only care about the music and really don't trip on who/what went on in the control booth, please compile an listing of all these, in your opinions, so-called shoddy releases. However, be forewarned, if any are simply going to reply 'ALL of Them!', well, I suppose we know what this really means.

    Re: Alan Douglas Releases

Hm, isn't there a thread on this?
Anyway; I like them ALL, he he.

Except: parts of Crash Landing, Midnight Lightning. A couple of re-makes on CL actually improved on the demos and made them more listenable if we forget the session musician controversy. ML is just uncomfortable listening, as Douglas has admitted.

Some newcomers seem confused as to which albums Douglas had a hand in. His first Hendrix release was Crash Landing; he had nothing to do with the albums released up to 1974.

Well, there is a great deal of AD-bashing in various threads. If there is a focal thread please post a link and the mods may close this one.

    Re: Alan Douglas Releases

Back in the TDK-AD cassette days, I happily used "Message To Love", "Power Of Soul" and "Peace In Mississippi" from "Crash Landing" on some neat personal compilations. The rest of it I didn't like.
"Midnight Lightning" was pretty well unlistenable, although I was under the spell of "Once I Had A Woman".
The inclusion of the US "Red House" on "Are You Experienced" infuriated me (the wrong "Can You See Me" also).
"Voodoo Soup" was a bloody mess but I really like all his other Hendrix releases.

What do you mean by the wrong "Can You See Me"?

He used the US Smash Hits mix and not the original UK version. There is little difference between the two however. To help tell them apart, on the US version, Jimi says "You can't see me" over the closing drum roll. A rather clothy sounding mono version of the UK version appeared recently on "WCSB".

Yes, a different mix/version, whatever - but how is it 'wrong'?

Well, the idea behind Dougies "AYE" was to stay in line with the British release sequence, with the UK single A and B sides in chronological order, followed by the track listing of the UK/European album. A purist's approach. In that case, it would have made more sense to use the exact origianal versions! He made such a stupid mistake by using the US "Red House" and "Can You See Me". So then he put the UK "Red House" on "Blues" (the dummy).

Thanks for the clarification purple jim!
I was unaware of the differences between the 2 versions of Can You See Me.

I guess you learn something new every day.
