So if we have a forum for lyrics...

Why not one for guitar parts? Or better yet, rename the Song lyrics forum to just Songs so its not limited to lyrics. From there you could even give each song its own thread. I just figured out the descending chromatic lick Jimi used in Valleys of Neptune and it occurred to me to make this thread for the guitarists. I'm not sure though, what say you? There ought to be a section that appeals to people who enjoying playing Jimi as much as hearing Jimi though, that's for sure.

That'd be cool. I'd contribute a few of my favorite Hendrix licks.

that would be fine, except that "anything Hendrix related" is pretty vague and there is no way to define "separate from the music" because there is no specifically "music" forum similar to how there previously was no lyrics forum. in other words the forum nomenclature never went as far as distinguishing Hendrix from Hendrix's music and either my idea of the name change or even yours of creating another forum would remedy this error in semantics.

    Sure why not.....
VON.....another C# utilizing the open bottom E....I always liked the way Hendrix used this key.....
If you got the original vocal VON track....you'll notice a variation of the descending scale also.....
Curious.....what key do you find the song 'Somewhere' to be in?
Do you get key of F# out of it ?

The rhythm guitar on Somewhere has the high and low E strings tuned down a whole step. It's pretty weird, I've never heard Jimi do that on anything else. It's just basically a Am G F chord prog. I don't remember if he is tuned down to Eb as usual, or it may be even down to D, but E strings are both down a whole step. Try it out. 6 5 4 3 2 1 D a d g b d Anyway, the entire middle part, the guitar solo is so cool, one of my favorite Hendrix solo's.

Tricky...but yes, F# seems correct to me.
And yeah, Cm seemed to be Jimis favorite key, if he had one that is.
About VON, I first heard the riff on the original version, a couple years before EHs pitiful copy paste job which excludes that riff, which was supposed to introduce the vocals. On EHs version he plays a nice variation of said riff at the verse break at about 1:06. It goes,

    e.------------------------------------------------------------------
    b.---0----0-------------------------------------------------------
    g.---4h6 4-------------------------------------------------------
    d.------------6-5-4---2----------------------2h4-2------------
    a.---------------------------4-------------2--4------------4--2--
    E.--------------------------------0--2--4------------------------4

The 'Lifelines' VON version?...that's the 1st I ever heard the track....with some ass talking over it and then it cut out...
that's what I call the 'vocal version'....I think that's the original track EH took the vocal track from for their VON album version..Lifelines has the descending riff after a chord opening even before the 1st verse.....but it's a variation...it has more descending down the A and E string notes...and then when he hits the bottom E he doesn't seem to know where to go so he just hits low E,middle E,low F#,middle F#....in the EH-VON he hits the bottom then comes back up a few notes on the A and D string as you posted below.

    e.------------------------------------------------------------------
    b.---0----0-------------------------------------------------------
    g.---4h6 4-------------------------------------------------------
    d.------------6-5-4---2----------------------2h4-2------------
    a.---------------------------4-------------2--4------------4--2--
    E.--------------------------------0--2--4------------------------4

Good job....matches the transcribed version too....

Yeah that's the one where Jimi says to Mitch "you don't have to follow everything." after abruptly ending the song. I will tab that out when I have a comp.
And thanks for the Valleys of Neptune tab book although I don't need it anymore. Songsterr had a tab up too, there's was a little off though. Check out Songsterr if you haven't.

Many years back there was a boot circulating with different mixes of this song and (maybe other songs too, I don't remember) but the rhythm guitar track was more up front nad quite noticeable. have you ever really listened to that rhythm guitar track isolated?

here's the Intro riff to Valleys of Neptune that not heard on EH's version but you can hear it in practically every other version (bootlegs mostly), although Jimi plays variations of the bluesy lick at the end.

    e.--------------------------------------------------
    b.---0---0-----------------------------------------
    g.---4h6-4-----------------------------------------
    d.---------6-5-----4-2-----------------------------
    a.---------------------4-3------4-2----------2--2h4
    E.----------------------------------4-3----4---4----

must be one I haven't heard or can't remember off hand....
when I mess around with that song I usually bounce between the riffs....
the other one I use just descends all the way to E...I like to ring the open high E also...(just my preference)

I collect them all(internet).. but they are like anything else...just a peice of the overall picture...I'll look in the books, watch Hendrix video(if it exists),check out other people's interpretations(youtube mostly) and even the instructional videos...Aledort mostly...he seems to have a grasp on it...tho' even if you watch him play and look at his tab...he doesn't always follow it either....some of those instructional videos are really kinda funny to watch when the person is so way off....but getting them on-line is OK...if I was to purchase them ..I'd be a little pissed off....the 1st AYE video is kinda different 'cause it has footage of Jimi playing the songs(if it exists) along with music theory explained by Velvet Turner.
some don't care for it but as I said I collect alot of the stuff for the heck of it......to me it's like trying to get an idea of who Hendrix was.....after reading about 20 books....it starts to become clearer...there is no 1 way or the other....just bits and peices to put together if one is interested in investing the time to be able to weed out what's most likely correct and what's most likely BS....this forum too is just another piece of the picture as well....but extremely useful to me.

Ok...I apologize for the 'smokin' comment...but I have no idea where you're coming from with the Am,G,F prog. for the verses...you may be correct about the E's being tuned down to D...I haven't dissected the lead bits much...and yes ....I have some of the various takes of 'Somewhere' from the boots.....the one with the lead on one track and the rhythm on the other is pretty cool....that's where I 1st heard the low E note played during the 'bridge' part...which would be impossible to play if using the ole' Em,G,A prog. that seems to be that favored postion by the you-tubers.
