Band of Gypsys Reel to Reel scans

Just got an original copy of the Band of Gypsys release on REEL TO REEL from my Dad. I've coveted that baby for a long time and he finally gave it up. I did some scans of the box and reel in case anyone else thought it was half as cool as i do!

Wow! Very nice artifact; never seen this. Thanks for taking the time to post it!

I love the little note at the bottom :

Automatic recording signals permit complete play from beginning to end, without reel turnover, when used on recorders equipped with Ampex-style reversing circuitry
This means that the tape was 1/4 track, and some was recorded in the opposite direction, which is why it looks like such a small amount of tape on the reel.

At 7 1/2 ips this looks to be around 15 minutes per side or so....

    Cool, thanx.
Looks like the copy I have but will give it a closer look later.
Maybe you want to post these in the Official release thread? I think I posted some awhile back but not sure if I included this version.
    Off to check .........
    Thanks again for sharing :-)

Just checked the BOG and Reel to Reel Official release's thread and sad to say the attachments are gone :-(
I will add my scans again in time (i'm sure Billo will too) but not until we get our "fix".

    Hi Charlie.
Vinyl wins hands down, even when R2R is at it's best as far as I can hear.
No chance you bugger but when I get some time I'll send you some transfers I have of this stuff.

Thanks for the cool replies and interest. One more thing; had to talk to my Dad about something else and it turns out that he bought the tape either at a military PX in Danang, Vietnam or in China during the Vietnam war...crazy!

Have you ever heard 1/2 inch masters played back? I was fortunate to hear some years ago on a modified Studer/Revox machime thru Infinity reference standard speakers.. Put Vinyl to shame with the dynamcs and clarity, very low noise since they were studio masters.

Indeed it will sound good, better in fact. But 1/2 inch tape is not standard listening media.
Put that up against a top end TT set up with the same components and I'll bet you hear no difference. Just that you will find top end TT in households but never a 1/2 inch R2R.

I am fully aware of the merits of tape, but lets keep it accessable :-)

Oh yeah. I have have heard 1/2 masters and 1 inch tape and 2 inch tape. All in an analog studio, quite often back in the late 80's and early 90's. The studio in question was one of the last to have an all analog set up in the UK. The mixing desk was from the 60's / 70's. Right behind the desk was the tape machine, a joy to behold :-)
