    Re: Berkeley Girls

For what its worth, the lady who provided the photos is sticking to her story, until proven otherwise, even though I gently suggested it might have been Golden Gate Park, Santa Clara Fairgrounds, or Sacramento. I'm sure if she comes up with any more evidence, she'll contact me. And she did re-iterate that the provided photos may not have been the same show she attended. She believes those Cal-Expo photos were taken by her uncle Billy Moore a Bay Area TV news cameraman (in case anyone wants to try and track HIM down!)

I've also invited her to drop by this forum and write to us directly.

It seems unlikely to me that a 10 - 15 year old would recall "seeing" Jimi, if all she did was listen from the park though the back door of the building. If I was in that situation I'd be pissed I couldn't see and would definitely remember that! The fact that she specifically remembers standing on gravel and that there may be gravel in front of the Provo Stage seems some small bit of corroboration.

It does seem unlikely that Jimi would have played a free concert in Provo Park on Memorial Day weekend given the general anarchy that was going on in the streets. So IF he played Provo Park, then perhaps it was in 67 before he was quite so huge an attraction.

[QUOTE=stplsd;72991]I suggest she's getting mixed up, it was the second day (19th) that was cancelled, not the second show, he played two shows the first day, the second show was taped. OK if the 2nd show was taped, then the youtube footage would have to have been from the 1st show, because the 2nd show you can clearly see the equipment, covered with tarps, mike too and it was dark
i know im getting off the BCT track, forgive me for that, but my point is that if the miami show was recorded from the 2nd show, then why is the audio we have appears to be in the light/not dark and the 1st show there were NOT tarps
I like the new photo's thanks so much for posting them

How many free concerts (we're not talking Jimi casually jamming on a couple of numbers here, Newport 69 [not one of Jimi groups - a mixed jam], after hours jams, or organised charity event appearances (ie three only)) by any of Jimi's groups have been documented?

    I''ll hazard a guess: 1

How many from 1969-70 have not one photograph (that would be an interesting list, might spark someone's memory, you never know), no contemporary witness, no advert, no paper/magazine report, no reference of any kind - apart from a couple of extremely vague, 40 year old internet "memories."
Then again I think there are possibly still available photos that haven't had the concert identified? So it's, maybe, not for sure that those few gigs don't have photos, they've just not been identified?

Is anyone disputing that the list of 'official' concerts is complete? Some lists I've seen even include concerts that were actually cancelled.

    Re: Berkeley Girls

Lets break down what we know. If a gig in Provo Park actually took place and that is a big if:

1.) 1965 Jimi was an unknown sideman so I don't think so.
2.) 1966 Jimi still mostly unknown until he went to Europe in the latter part of the year. So again no.
3.) 1967 6/26 and 6/27 (Monday/Tuesday) are definitely possibilities right after Monterey, his Fillmore shows and the free Golden Gate Park gig. After their big explosion at Monterey the band is both looking for work and exposure. This would have been a good time to travel across the Bay to the other Park full of hippies in addition to Golden Gate Park.

4.) 1968 Open between Portland on 9/9 and Oakland 9/13 as was 9/14 prior to Sacramento on 9/15. Possibly still in the Bay area all the way from 9/16 to 10/5 Honolulu and there is a weekend in there there so maybe a surprise show in the Bay area at Provo Park.

5.) 1969 Between Oakland 4/27 and 5/2 Detroit is possible. These were weekdays. Between 5/25 Santa Clara and 5/30 Honolulu open and are again weekdays.

6.) 1970 Open between 4/26 Sacramento and 5/1 Milwaukee. Again on weekdays. Lastly 5/31 Sunday and 6/1 Monday Memorial day as recounted by edubb's conversation stating it was the day after the BCT shows.

I am leaning towards 6/26 or 6/27 because he wasn't a big star yet and still looking for exposure and with all the good vibes from Monterey and the Fillmore along with looking for exposure this makes the most sense. 5/31/1970 or 6/1/1970 or one of the 1968 dates would be my other guess if it happened at all.

One person has the year wrong for sure and the other didn't even remember he went to BCT the night before insisting he only saw Jimi in the Park not at BCT before the old cobwebbs cleared.

If nothing else we got some cool new pictures out of the investigation.

The whole point at that time was pub & exposure, which was one reason the free concert in Golden Gate was advertised ahead of time with flyers.

And Hendrix was hobbling along with Buddy Miles who had to play a gig at the Golden Gate, and Hendrix just sat in, using one of the amps of a lady-guitarists of an all-female group. I mean, there was a reason and a connection for Hendrix being at the Golden Gate park. He wasn't simply passing by himself. There doesn't seem to be a connection of this sort with the Provo Park, like someone, a musician, promoter, or friend, who could have invited him over there. Still might have happened, though. But let's wait and see if the lady can find some corroborative evidence. I am curious!

It appears to have paid off as Purple Haze was listed as a regional hit for San Francisco in Billboard. Also interesting as this was before the date most say that the single was released by Reprise? I'm sure he was also aiming at establishing "underground" (acid) cred.

He is also mentioned in the final edition (Aug 67) of Mojo Navigator as also having done several interviews on San Francisco radio stations at the time (summer 1967), where he freely discussed what was behind his lyrics etc. Hopefully somebody taped one or two and they turn up.

So you're saying the silent B&W ABC newsreel and colour footage we have, is from the same show as the soundboard audio recording? It seems to be accepted by most that it's from the 2nd show, of which there are several photos of him playing, he's wearing a completely different outfit (blue & pink) and it's at night. See:

Always a possibility. Or did bands never play free shows then? Richard lived in L.A. Hendrix stayed there for a while when playing for Richard and Richard (with JH) did play the Fillmore 21 Feb 1965 (Ike and Tina on the same bill). He quite probably stood out from the rest (see his stage moves on the Buddy & Stacy video), there is mention of him being allowed a small amount of freedom in playing style and showiness onstage with Richard - but not as regards dress! She may well have recognized him later as being JH

    ?

Talking about the one the entire Experience played. Point was taking advantage of the tremendous word-of-mouth generated by Monterey 'debut' & people who wanted to see this guy perform but had missed the festival show for one reason and another.

The girl on the right, however is just soaking it all in and never shifts her gaze from Jimi. In the film they look like they're both very young, maybe 14 or 15.

I've always wondered who they are, where are they now, and do they even know they're in the movie?

Same goes for any of the other colorful characters in the film - the redneck, the "Boycott Woodstock, we made this movie!" girl, etc. Wish I could think of a way to track them down and interview them.
KD: Hey RS. I played briefly with a female singer songwriter a few years ago from Missouri. One day to a rehearsal at my house she brought along a female sax player to jam with us - she was one of the girls from the Berkeley film and was also from Missouri. She claimed her and her friend were both just 15 at the time, both out of their minds on LSD and just wandered in WITHOUT tickets and walked up to the front row for BOTH SHOWS ! Her name was Janice.

Forgot to add, Ace of Cups opened for the Experience that day; could you be confusing this gig with the Newport set Jimi 'sat in' on for a jam w/ Buddy possibly? Btw bit of trivia the flatbed truck belonged to Jefferson Airplane (for anyone who didn't know). And by way of reminder the JHE then played 2 shows at the Fillmore that evening.

6.25.67 The Panhandle, Golden Gate Park - Jimi Hendrix Experience/Ace of Cups

Free concert. This was the week after Monterey Pop, and the Jimi Hendrix Experience was playing the Fillmore all week. The Electric Flag were rehearsing at the Ace of Cups house in Mill Valley, and that is how Ace of Cups got the call to open for Hendrix in the park. Hendrix used Mary Ellen Simpson’s amp.

Love those details, thanks. Jimi commented on how he liked the Cups somewhere, must check it out
