Maui Concert Location - Current Photos ??

    Hi Everyone

I'm new to Crosstown Torrents but have been on the Pass It On list and was on the old Voodoo Chile list for years. It's great to be a part of the forum here.

I'm after modern day photos of the exact location where Jimi perfomed his two classic July 30th shows on Maui. Does anyone know where the exact location of the show was ?. Depedning on who you believe it was either right on the edge of the Haleakala Crater, just next to Seabury Hall or near a street called Dairy Road according to the Eyewitness book.

I've looked at Google Maps, Google Earth, etc and all three locations are a fair distance from one another. From what I can see on Google Earth, the most likely location is near Seabury Hall where there are a few large areas of grass which look like they could be where the concert was.

If anyone has some more information on the exact location or some modern day photos of the exact location I'd be extremely greatful.

    Thanks,

    CC

I think you're on the right track. I've always wondered why a 'shrine' of some sort was never placed there. Maybe those flying saucers 'removed' any 'evidence'?

Here is what Wiki has :

    Rainbow Bridge Concert

Rainbow Bridge was a free unpromoted Jimi Hendrix concert in a horse pasture, 3000 feet up the slope of Mt. Haleakala on the island of Maui in Hawaii. A modest audience of a few hundred island hippies, surfers, and students showed up because it was rumored that Hendrix might play a free concert for a movie that Chuck Wein was directing. It was also rumored that flying saucers were predicted to arrive and hover over the concert to meet Jimi. The saucers failed to show.

This show on Maui was the last recorded Hendrix concert in the U.S. Some people mistakenly claim that this was the last live show Hendrix did in the U.S.; Hendrix actually did one more show in Honolulu, August 1 1970, before his death on September 18, 1970 in London, England.

The field is across from a rodeo center/parking lot. About a mile up the hill from Seabury Hall. It's somebody's backyard now. If you drive into the Seabury Hall parking lot (heading out of Makawao to Olinda) and turn left, you'll see the open field where the concert took place.

My friend Bryan is writing a book about the show and trying to find the damn place at 5 a.m. He mistakenly went to the top of Haleakala. Bryan took several incredible unpublished photos.

The Oskie Rice Rodeo Arena, the big oval/oblong dusty piece of ground on the left, heading south, on Olinda rd? is described as being only a mile from Makawao town, it appears to be no more than a couple of hundred yards above Seabury, just across from the Hanamu rd junction? see satellite map link above. is the field/'someone's backyard' on the south side of Hanamu rd?

    From Wikipedia:

The "Rainbow Bridge" concert was a free concert by Jimi Hendrix that was held on July 30, 1970, in a horse pasture above Seabury Hall, on the "Upcountry" slopes of Haleakala, the volcano that makes up 75% of the island of Maui, Hawaii, although it probably last erupted in the 1600s, it is officially considered as being active.

If you make a right on Hanamu Rd, at Olinda Rd, on your left you will see open pastures ("backyard") and a fence to keep the wild life in. I was told by locals, that concertgoers parked in that lot and walked across Olinda Rd to where the concert took place. A better place to view the field would be from the Seabury Hall parking lot, facing Hanamu Rd. That way you won't be blocking or get stuck in a ditch. Do stop at the burrito place (across from Casanova's) for a good inexpensive meal.

I asked Melinda if she wanted to make the trek back there this July, but it looks like it will have to wait until next year.

I'm not very good with directions, I'm a bit confused. Could you be a little clearer.

If I was to drive down Hanamu rd towards the Olinda rd junction and turn right onto Olinda rd?
If I then looked to my left I would see the Oskie Rice Arena rodeo ground and large fields/pasture?

If you then walk across Olinda road there are several houses and backyards with 4 large fields and open pasture at the back of them, on the south side of Hanamu rd. I presume the houses were built after the concert? and that the pasture at the back of the houses is the concert site

Again, is it on the south side, ie across hanamu rd from Seabury hall?

Take a look at the Google map.
Leave Makawao going up the hill on Olinda Rd.
Find Seabury Hall on your right.
Find the corner of Olinda Rd and Hanamu Rd.
Make a right turn - the only direction you can go.
On your left is the field where the concert took place, but much has changed since 1970.
If you park in the Seabury Hall parking lot, facing Hanamu Rd. you can also see the field.

    Hope that helps.

Many thanks for that, got the picture. So it was just a couple of hundred yards above Seabury Hall, after all. Just about a mile from the centre of Makawao town. Is that Melinda Merryweather? you mentioned. What's she up to these days? Any good info/stories on what Jimi got up to there?

You can see the open field here. The property is more divided now as you head past Seabury Hall. The scene here in the video was shot at Seabury Hall. It looks entirely different now. A rather elite private school.

    Happy Earth Day!

I always thought it looked rather windy, What kind of temperatures would Jimi have played in at the end of July?

Yes, it was obviously quite windy. Maui is a windy place, in common with most small islands stuck in the middle of a giant ocean. It was also obviously quite warm as the audience is mostly half dressed and sunburned.

It's usually about 10 to 20 degrees cooler up in Makawao than at the beaches. Actually very comfortable.

Aint the internet great, one moment you're talking to someone in Vladivostok (teros23)
and then you can take a virtual walk on Maui at the Rainbow Bridge site.
Why was the concert held at this particular place, remember vagely it had something to do with this place having the best vibe at that time??????
Maybe someone can tell a bit more about why it was exactly held here.
    Thanks in advance

I missed going over to Seabury hall due to it being a "family trip". I thought we were close to the "field" before going up the mountain. We did make it to the top of Haleakala. It wasn't cold at all but windy considering you're at 10K feet. Impressive volcano and Island. Here's a shot around 8K feet looking back towards where Seabury hall and the field would be at the very bottom hidden by the clouds of course. Would loved to have been sitting there on 30 July 1970.
